Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mimika. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Mimika, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you wish you had started sooner?
I often find myself having thoughts about timing and success, and looking at artists that I admire and trying to trace back from where they are now to the start of their careers. More often than not, they found success very young and this can either be a blessing or a curse.
I doubt that anyone is unaware of the awful circumstances that can derail a child or teen star’s career so I’ll move us right along from that.
I used to wish that I had found more massive success at a younger age. I think all the time about what my life would have been like if I’d continued acting as a child or had stayed as a dancer or any combination of different plot lines in my life. But now, I look at things a little differently.
I look at all of the experiences I’ve had that wouldn’t have been possible if things had turned out differently- my education being a massive one. I also wonder about the implications it would have had on my development as an artist. It’s taken me years to figure out who I am as a person and as a pop artist and I think having a massive platform while trying to do that would obviously have shaped me very differently.
I’m so passionate about the music I’m making now and proud of my journey and evolution. I know that I’m officially at the point where I’m ready for the success that I’m receiving and that I know what to do with it as it comes.
All of this to say, don’t stress so much about the when, worry about who you are. Keep doing what makes you happy and excited every day, that way when success comes you just get to amplify where you’re already at.
Mimika, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
The start of everything for me was writing and performing. They’ve always gone hand in hand in some capacity throughout my entire life.
I started songwriting when I was very young and began working professionally, writing for other artists while studying at Berklee College of Music. I still continue to write for others but have shifted my focus to my own artist career.
I’ve been releasing my own music for years but really began properly rolling projects out in 2020. This summer I started the release cycle for my first official EP and am really thrilled about the way everything is going.
I think the through line for me, with all of my work, is my writing. I have a very story-based approach and it comes out in everything I do. I’m always looking for the emotional connection that can drive a story home or make it really personal.
The most important thing to know about my music is that it’s honest and written in an almost painstakingly thought-out way.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Be a fan!
Of musicians, artists, directors, authors, all creatives!
I think in our social media-filled world it can sometimes feel like a competition to like something, or that if you want to be involved in a community you need to be super well-versed or 100% dedicated to only that thing. Enjoying something just for the sake of enjoying it and because it makes you happy is so valid. I think there’s a ton of pressure on people, creatives, and the general public, to curate the things we enjoy to fit certain aesthetics and brands and that’s so exhausting. Love what you love and be proud of it no matter who you are or what you do.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Honestly, every aspect of the creative process is so rewarding but the two that always get me the most are listening to a final master for the first time of a song that you absolutely adore and hearing a song resonate with people when you perform it live. I put out a song in 2022 called ‘Hate Me More’ and it was incredibly vulnerable and daunting to release but, it was one of those songs that felt magical to create and the first time I played it live the audience was dead silent for a few seconds afterward. It was almost like we were all taking a collective deep breath before everyone started applauding and cheering. It was one of my favorite live moments and I’m so excited to have more of those.
