We were lucky to catch up with Mimi K recently and have shared our conversation below.
Mimi, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you in your professional career?
My main focus as a yoga instructor is working one on one with seniors. It’s my joy to share information and ideas pertaining to body – mind integration. At seventy two I’ve quickly become aware that maintaining one’s balance is crucial to an extended healthy life. I truly enjoy helping people thrive and in return I am constantly receiving positive feedback which helps me flourish too.
As a former interior decorator I learned the 80/20 rule. Listening for 80 percent of the time and talking 20 percent of the time.
The company’s practice of this idea led to the clients comfort in making choices and feeling that they were heard.
I’ve found the 80/20 rule helps in the yoga field also.
Mimi, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have taken yoga classes for decades. I retired in February of 2020 and we all know what happened then. With plenty of time on my hands I enrolled and got my 200 hour RYT certification. I’ve been having a wonderful time starting to work one on one with my peers. Life is good.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Joining Instagram has been beneficial in connecting with my age group concerning their goals and needs. I have become an avid fan of Dr. David Sinclair, professor of genetics at Harvard who is focusing on epigenetics. I also follow Dan Buettner – known as the Blue Zones guy, who studies the five places on the planet where people live the healthiest and longest lives. I enjoy reading and studying their findings.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Definitely for me that would be empathy. I find having a rapport with people is essential to a fulfilling client experience in the field of health. Usually within the first hour with a one on one yoga lesson a beautiful bond is created between student and teacher. That’s where the health and mental clarity meet.
