We recently connected with Mimi Jasperson and have shared our conversation below.
Mimi, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Was there an experience or lesson you learned at a previous job that’s benefited your career afterwards?
In my prior job, I was in a completely different industry as the Beverage Director for a nationwide hospitality group headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona. I would say the most important lesson I learned was the absolute necessity of collaboration. As a self-diagnosed type A personality and a “I can do it myselfer” (you can ask my husband, I think it drives him crazy everyday). I would have this tendency to want to go it alone whether it was preparing a financial analysis for my department or one of the venues, or preparing for an upcoming cocktail program for a new venue. In the infancy of that career after a few too many times operating in a silo for a project that took me down a completely different path from what the real goal/expectation was; for context I was tasked with putting together our version 1 ideation for a new menus cocktail program and didnt take the time to collaborate with the operations teams or marketing team. Instead I came up with this beautiful cocktail program that unfortunately flopped during my presentation solely because it didnt align with the marketing & operational concept. This was my aha moment. I truly learned that success in any project is never a solo effort. And this changed the way I approached leadership and problem-solving. I realized that collaboration was key to the overall execution and success of my projects. From that point forward I would sit down with my respective colleagues from the departments that would be affected by my programming and discuss their goals, collaborate and ensure alignment. Success isn’t about having the best concept—it’s about making sure everyone is equipped, excited, and aligned to bring that concept to life.
Mimi, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Movement has been my passion for as long as I can remember. I was the quintessential 3 year old in the tutu & tap shoes. As a lifelong dancer, I developed a deep connection to my body—its rhythm, strength, and mechanics. While earning my Bachelor’s in Dance Performance & Choreography at Arizona State University, I was introduced to kinesiology and somatic cuing, which gave me a deeper understanding of how the body moves as an interconnected system. While studying at ASU, I started weight training with my then boyfriend and now husband, Zach. At that time I was clueless but I went along and he would take me through workouts.
Over time, my love for dance and that little bit of time in the gym, evolved into a passion for strength training, core stability, and nutrition. So for about 10 years I was on my own personal fitness and wellness journey. Learning proper lifting technqiues, progressive overload and more, while working in the hospitality industry. Strength Training was solely my personal passion and honestly my stress relief. In 2021 I became pregnant with my daughter, Zoe and continued weight lifting & strength training up until the day she was born. After Zoe was born I continued to work in hospitality but found my mind in other places; wanting to be home with my daughter. In the beginning of 2024 after years of stating to friends and family that I would love to be a personal trainer I put my money where my mouth was & what started as a personal journey soon became my professional calling when I became a Certified Personal Trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). I realized that fitness wasn’t just about movement—it was about confidence, resilience, and balance, both physically and mentally.
I believe that fitness should be approachable, sustainable, and enjoyable, no matter where you are in your journey. Through my training, I help my clients understand proper lifting technique, reconnect with their bodies, support them nutritionally as a Nutrition Coach and act as a sounding board in their overall life. I believe that being fit isn’t just a physical attribute but is mental and emotional. I believe that as a trainer my job is to support and teach health, wellness & fitness as a holistic lifestyle. No fads, no quick fixes but instead how it fits into each individuals daily life and how to prioritize health through balance.
After starting as a personal trainer & nutrition coach, I decided to add one additional certification as a Pregnancy & Postpartum Athelticism Coach through Brianna Battles. As I mentioned above, I weightlifted throughout my pregnancy with my daughter and I hate to admit but didnt have any of the knowledge that I have today about proper breathing, pressure management, tension and postural support. With statistically over 80% of women becoming pregnant in their lifetime, strength training has for years not supported that community. I now want to support my clients today to feel strong and safe in their pregnancy & postpartum journey’s
I currently train clients in-person at a private studio right in the heart of old town Scottsdale called Raise the Bar Training Studio; as well as work online with clients.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
In the personal training I think the most helpful attribute beyond knowledge which you really can never get enough of, that has been most helpful for success in this field is consistency & organization. Being consistent in your practice for yourself and your clients. When someone comes to a personal trainer for 1:1 or small group support or online programming; they are trusting that you are there to guide them in that process. I have always been a believer in systems and find that having strong systems & organization creates a sense of consistency. For my clients that is using an app based platform to house their workouts, track their progress and manage all communication including habit tracking, meal & macro planning and motivational support. For me personally as a business owner that is having calendar tracking for client coaching sessions, proper timelines for upcoming program adjustments and weekly dedicated time for straight administrative work like website optimization, content creation and more. I find that having these systems and timelines in place keeps the trains running on schedule and keeps my clients engaged and my plates spinning.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been a combination of authentic networking and creating programming that truly speaks to my clients’ needs.
I’ve found that genuine connections—both in-person and online—are what bring in the most loyal clients. Instead of hard-selling my services, I focus on building relationships and trust. I think in a world that always wants to present a sense of perfection, I make a point to be approachable and real to who I am as a person, as a trainer, as someone in their own health & wellness journey. I prefer to share my passion for fitness & wellness in a natural way.
People are more likely to trust and continue to invest in a trainer when they see that I live what I teach and that I genuinely care about their individual journey. Whether it’s through tailored programming, customized nutrition planning or just supporting them in a hard day at work or a rough patch in their personal life journey; I would say connections over transactions has been my focus and has created sustainable growth for my business
