Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mimi (FeedMi). We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Mimi thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I do find a lot of joy in being able to express my creativity. Photos and videos to me are like little time capsules. It’s cool that you can capture a moment in time and be able to look back on it years after. I have been taking photos since I was in junior high. I just stored them in my laptop and didn’t really do much with it until 2018, I decided to start sharing with others on Instagram. It started out as photos of food and it was fun to develop my skills as a photographer, food stylist, editor, and copywriter. It was also cool to connect with people from all around the world over mutual interests and help them find a new restaurant, recipe, or dish to try.
In 2020, TikTok began to really take off and I became more interested in learning how to create videos. It was a challenge at first to shift gears but also fun to piece together different clips and sounds to tell a full story versus just a singular image. The great thing about being a creator is there are endless amounts of ways you can create. It’s always so rewarding to see a project through from beginning to end that you developed yourself. However, there are always those days when imposter syndrome hits or you hit a creative roadblock. Because of this, I am glad that I still have a “regular” job.
I work full-time as an epidemiologist which is very data focused and black and white. Also being a creator gives me a nice balance of both worlds. I am able to use my platforms as a creative outlet without the pressure of having to create constantly in order to pay the bills. I am able to take breaks and keep it fun, which I think shines through in the stuff I create.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am the food and travel content creator behind FeedMi. I like to share all things food, snippets of everyday life, travel adventures, and culture. I have always been one of those stereotypical millennials who always takes photos of their food. I never really did anything with them until one day someone asked me, “what do you do with all those photos”? That prompted me to start sharing them on social media in hopes that someone besides myself would find some value in them too. I started in 2018 and it quickly evolved to being more than just sharing photos. Since then I launched my own website, built from scratch, developed a community on different platforms like Instagram and TikTok, and collaborated with some of my favorite brands.
As a young adult and first generation Vietnamese-American, FeedMi also became a way for me to document recipes I’ve learned from my parents, other cooks, and myself through trial and error. I have so much to learn in the kitchen but hope that by me sharing my experiences, others will find cooking more approachable. I truly believe that anyone can create something delicious at home without being a master chef!
I also love to travel and try new things and encourage others to do the same. I feel like you can grow so much by going out of your comfort zone. That could be exploring new destinations, learning about different cultures, or trying a new restaurant. I always say try everything twice, you never know what you are missing out on! Of course I document every step (and bite) of the way.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to encourage people to try new things and get out of their comfort zone. You never know what you are missing out on!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is being able to connect with people. I love it when I am able to help someone find their new favorite restaurant, cook something delicious, or visit somewhere new.
