We recently connected with Mimi Are and have shared our conversation below.
Mimi, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
To be successful, it takes strive, dedication, consistency, determination, focus and most importantly it takes you being in a stable mental place. A lot can come with determination, dedication and sorts but if your mind is not still/out of focus it will be so hard to be successful. There will be constant struggle between success and inner self. My advice will be to get your mind ready, I know it sounds easier said than done but if your mind can agree with your dreams and ambitions, then you are already at least 25% ahead of the game.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Aminat Are, know as Mimi. I the owner of Mimi’s Beauty Co. I am a full-time makeup artist, a wig specialist, and an entrepreneur. Mimi’s Beauty Co. specializes in products and services that currently include makeup application/lessons, hair styling, wig making, makeup products/tools. Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
At first, I learned/thought that clients are loyal to as long as you bend over backwards to all their needs. I had to unlearn that because in some situations it became unhealthy and it seems like boundaries were not respected. I had clients treating me as “the help” instead of a service provider, I had to create healthy boundaries and stand on the core values of my business which is providing great service and customer satisfaction but that still followed my set guidelines and made sure it was a win-win not a win-lose(service provider) situation.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
Makeup was my side hustle for so long until about 2021, I usually would have full time jobs or at least a part time in order to survive. There’s always going to be a turning point in life where you can choose to go forward or backwards and after my job furloughed us back in 2020 for some months and then called us back randomly when they were ready was my own turning point. I knew then I couldn’t afford to be an employee that can just be let go of anytime/any day. I turned my side hustle makeup into my full time business and I started to make twice the amount I would make in a month at my previous job and it was half of the hours I would have had to work. My business got to where it is today by consistency and allowing my mind to align with my goals.
