We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mimi and Mason a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Mimi and Mason, appreciate you joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Mimi – I think how “success” is defined shifts as we move into different phases of our lives and careers. In my case, that meant pay and promotions in a corporate role, and then it shifted to raising money and growing headcount after starting my first company. And now with content creation, I define success as learning to be proficient with new tools and finding ways to help other creators bring their vision to life. Ultimately, the goal in this space for me is to build a company with a product that solves a problem in this industry. What I’ve learned throughout these chapters is that the magic happens when you can build the connective tissue between vision and action through sheer stubbornness. You have to set big visions and goals, and push that boulder up that hill and figure it out. We can all dream and have ideas, but until you put in the work to make it happen, it’s only dreams and ideas.
Mason – We’re very early into our creative journey, it’s actually crazy how much we’ve grown. From our own capabilities and creativity, to audience size and support, we’ve already been far more “successful” than we could have expected. We knew very little when we started – nothing about video production, scripting, or storyboarding, what it’s like to be in front of the camera, and the never-ending rabbit hole of editing. I have lost count of the number of hours I’ve poured into YouTube tutorials and articles to teach myself skills that let us have content that not only stands out, but I’d like to consider comparable to professionally created content (sometimes). It’s an attention economy and there are new accounts doing great things every day. Showing up consistently for our audience with high quality product that is both entertaining and educational has been the secret sauce to our success so far.

Mimi and Mason, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Where to begin? We are Mimi and Mason, and we are a creative couple based in Canada and have a bernedoodle pup named Brooklyn. We love travelling (27 countries and counting!) and try to spend lots of time outside whether that is cycling or hiking.
People likely know us from our social media pages (@_mimiandmason on all platforms). We began in summer 2023, and have built an audience of almost 100k since then. Instagram is our main platform and is currently a funnel for brand collaborations and strategy sessions.
What people might not know about us is that we have other jobs outside of this! Mason is working full time in investment banking and Mimi does startup advisory and investing.
Something we want to emphasize is that we truly believe that anyone can be creative, and to express that through video, you don’t need to be professionally trained to make great content. We want to democratize knowledge about things like lighting and editing, and to inspire others to take a little leap into a medium like video. From big picture strategy about building a social voice that is in line with your personal brand, to tips and tricks about the end to end production process, we have been where you are and we understand the challenges.
For the brands out there, we only work with those where we can confidently stand by their product and we only share our honest opinions and experiences. Values alignment is really important to us!

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
We put ourselves to an extremely high quality standard and the only videos that get posted are the ones we are proud of. Full stop. We go through hundreds of ideas before acting on a handful of them, we go through iterations of scripting and storyboarding before grabbing a camera, some of our videos have taken 50+ hours to edit (not including trying to learn how to do a certain effect in the first place!) – we truly put our heart into everything we do….and as a result we think our audience recognizes it.
What helps our content stand out is our ability to approach any idea and concept and fully make it our own. Our brainstorming sessions get a little crazy, and our editing process involves passing it back and forth so by the time the world sees it, the results are usually pretty unique.

How did you two meet?
Cue cheesy rom-com music. Not really lol. We met in university through a student finance club in 2013. We were both coming out of our previous relationships and were hanging out a lot. It’s not that exciting.
Mimi – my whole plan was for Mason to be my “last year of school fling” of sorts. I wasn’t emotionally ready to commit to someone long term, so I figured graduating was an easy way out if things didn’t work. But here we are, over 10 years together and married…. We’ve gone through a lot together, we’ve traveled the world, moved cities multiple times, been through several different career paths – and at the end of the day I feel so lucky to have him in my corner as my best friend, husband, and partner in all things in life.
Mason – I still remember when we missed a train in Naples, Italy and Mimi got so pissed because we were supposed to spend the day exploring the Amalfi Coast. It was literally day 2 of a month-long backpacking trip and our first time travelling together. I proceeded to feel sick (easily motion sick) the rest of the day. Let’s just say emotions and stress were very high…BUT we pressed on, survived the day (and the trip), and the rest is history!
