We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Milyssa Rose a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Milyssa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I work closely with a ministry called Woww ministries. The organization is run by Pastor Cassandra Greene. I have a song entitled Fierce and Fabulous. The song is about female empowerment, and being able to be you and living your life for you. Pastor Cassandra reached out to me and wanted to do a PSA on domestic violence and mental health awareness.
It was incredibly meaningful and made an impact on myself and others.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am an entrepreneur, vocalist, songwriter, entertainer, model, and actress. What sets me apart from other others is I don’t follow the norm of what people think I should be. I stand for what I believe in. I would rather be myself than try to conform to a cookie-cutter artist’s image. I don’t play it safe. I take chances, challenge and push boundaries for myself. I am always trying to top myself. I am my competition.
I got where I am through hard work, determination, tears, heartache, and determination. I never lost focus on my dream. It was not easy. It is hard to be a female in the music business. It is a boys club. You have to be tough. You can’t let people walk all over you. I battle depression and anxiety. Sometimes, it is difficult for me to be in the right mind frame. I use music as my outlet. My therapy. I create not only for me but for others. No matter what you are fighting internally, you can make it. You must keep an eye on the prize, hustle hard, and perfect your craft. Never stop growing or learning.
My engineer and friend, D Cox, passed a year ago. I almost quit music. D was my mentor, my cheerleader, my everything music. When he passed, I felt like I was done for. He used to tell me one day; I would not work with him because I would blow up and work with other engineers. I never saw that day coming, and it did. D came to me in a dream and told me we weren’t done yet. I got a mic, learned to record myself, and found a new engineer through a mutual friend /artist I featured on a track with. It was fate. I want the world to know that you can do anything you want in life. You can be successful. It doesn’t matter where you started. You can achieve anything. The key is never to give up. I know it sounds cliche, but it is true. The people that become successful have a long list of failures and rejections. Keep going!!!! Your time is coming.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I battle mental health issues. It isn’t easy at times to get out of your head. I feel I picked myself up from the bottom after losing D. I think it is essential to focus on your blessings. At times, we put much emphasis on what is wrong. The mind is a powerful thing. You have to feed it with positivity.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Simon Sinek says you need to find your why. That is vital in everything you do. It is beneficial to know what gives you the reason to keep on keeping on. What is your greater purpose?
