We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Milo McFly. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Milo below.
Milo, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I would say my most meaningful project I’ve worked on would be all of them. Each project I release is the most meaningful for me at the time of writing because I use my music as a tool to work through my issues. So at the time of writing, each project holds the most weight. For example, my most recently released EP “Dusty Old Bones Full Of Green Dust” was a tool I used to work through my trauma, and that was incredibly meaningful for me. At this exact moment I would say the most meaningful project to me now is the album I’m working on. The scope of the album covers this entire year, and I’m utilizing the album as a tool to work through anything that arises each month.
Milo, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Milo McFly, and I created the music project “Roses!Hands!”. I’m a storyteller at heart, and I feel that really shines through in my music. With each project (whether it be an EP or a whole album), I try to have a thread running throughout. It can be a very literal story, in the sense that each track leads into another and progresses the story as a whole, or just a theme that is shown in a different light in each song. My most recently released EP at the time of this interview, “Dusty Old Bones Full Of Green Dust”, explores the theme of trauma and the lasting impact it has had on me. In tracks like the opener “Needle Stack” and “Panic!” I directly explore the idea of repeating the cycle of abuse and my fear of that happening to me. Whereas in the track “Twin Flames” I dive into how the trauma has affected my romantic relationships. I try to also use my music to write about my struggles and share what I’ve endured in hopes that someone else who is experiencing something similar may hear it and feel less alone.
My next EP will be coming out early next year, and directly follows a storyline of lovers stuck in a toxic cycle and refusing to let go of a relationship that is already dead. The first single from this was released earlier this year, titled “Running” and is available to stream on all platforms, as well as a music video on YouTube.
Recently I have also begun producing for others as well, including the incredibly talented “Morgan S Oteric” and my amazing friend Baylee.
In addition to writing, I also perform. I’m from St. Louis and play a lot of shows locally, particularly at the venue Red Flag. I choreograph a lot of my set and love to focus on the theatrical aspects of performing.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I would say to see my vision come to life. I associate songs with colors and numbers, so each track I release has a very specific feel and look in my head. So to see that on my screen or in front of me rather than just as a mental image is incredibly satisfying. Whether that take the form of finishing a music video, completing the album art for a project, or even the rollout leading up to the release on my instagram.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Consume! I am a huge proponent for consuming as much media as possible at any given moment, especially as an artist. I feel like watching different shows or films and reading lots of different formats not only gives you, the consumer, a wide variety of experiences, but also supports a large amount of creators. I feel like that is the best way to really get a creative ecosystem thriving. And even better, you can then share all the content you consume with your friends or family!
