We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Million Tyler. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Million below.
Alright, Million thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
My most recent album would go down as my most meaningful project. I was dealing with a lot of family trauma which caused me to take a year long break from music. I almost fell into a depression you could say. Writing has always been my way of releasing emotion, and it seemed I couldn’t even do that at the time. Luckily, through prayer and support I got my head back in the game. Building rapports with other artist and like minded individuals to help reinvent myself. Which then brought my creative juices back and my album “Please Excuse my Absence” was created. With tracks expressing what was going on, but that’s for my fans to decipher.
Million , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
First, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Million Tyler. I go by the stage name BagBaby Milli. I’m from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Currently I’m out in California with the sunshine. Growing up for me was a roller coaster. Originally I didn’t even want to be a musician, I wanted to be a veterinarian. I just loved music as well, you know? Ironically, my father loved music also. Inspiring him to create and chase a new dream which eventually lead to him becoming one of the best male artist in rap. Like any other child, I saw that and knew I wanted to be a “rapper” like my dad. Except way better, 10x better at that! From there I created different techniques to better myself. For example, one technique I’d use was to find a big artist at that time and I would write down their lyrics word for word in my rap journal. Then I would try to rewrite the song in my own words. Once you put yourself into a creative box open to all sounds and/or emotions styles, you’ll be able to create unique ones of your own. Creating a huge arsenal of sounds and flows, to a young kids extent, and continued to improve my craft. Fast forward 17 years, I’m storming the industry head first! From creating my own label “BagBaby Records”, to networking and having conversations with some of the biggest names in the game. If I could show you my life any clearer, it’d be a movie. The road was definitely difficult and I admit, I wanted to quit multiple times. That just wasn’t an option. I’m proud of the journey. “Stay hungry, and you’ll eat eventually“.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
YOU DON’T NEED ANYBODY! Don’t take that the wrong way, but it’s the truth. You may want to have different people around to help you elevate of course, but you don’t need them. Anything can be learned through trial and error. Most situations now-a-days are trial and error for sure. I put a lot of time into doing things how other people wanted them done with no regard about how I may view the situation. In my earlier days learning the industry I felt like if they had been in doors I wanted to get in, then I should do as they did. Now of course I don’t mean just random people, but as I made connections and met different walks of life I was blessed to come in contact with a lot of genuine individuals. On the other hand, I had my share of people who just wanted the monetary value they felt I had because of who I am. If I could pass advice, I’d say view the world for what it is, and not what you want it to be. It’ll blind your understanding. With that being said, don’t let anybody’s life make yours feel less. Everybody was created the same way, and we share the same 24 hours. Go out and get it, It’s never to late!
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Besides all the years and years of practice I’ve put into my craft, giving my daughter the best life is my overall goal. I want her to have the childhood I didn’t. The spoiled life! She deserves it. I know chasing my dreams and doing what I’m destined is how I will provide for her. Traveling the world with her, showing her how beautiful life is, showing her everything I can as a dad! With my dad always being on the road with his music career or incarcerated, I didn’t see him much. As I got older it started to bother me and take an emotional toll. I don’t want my daughter to go through those same feelings. Pray, chase this bag, provide for my daughter/family, sounds like a good life to me.
