We recently connected with Millicent Olasanoye and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Millicent, thanks for joining us today. Let’s go back in time a bit – can you share a story of a time when you learned an important lesson during your education?
My educational journey has been eventful and rewarding. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned was to do what you truly love. I know you hear it all the time but do we really search to do that? Sometimes other factors can get involved or your circumstances change. For me, I had a high school teacher, Mr. Benoit, who taught Marketing 101 and he was the reason I decided to do business during my undergrad years. Can you believe in the beginning business was my first love and then came makeup? YEAH! He was such an inspiring and motivating teacher; and he truly loved his career. Mr. Benoit always saw the positive traits in all the students. Today he would be identified as an “influencer”. He made an impact in my life and I’m thankful that I had someone who really cared about my educational goals. His dedication and commitment to ensure that his students thrived stuck with me throughout the years. I too wanted to have an impact on people because of him. I remember being a student and feeling confident to do anything I set my mind on regardless of the outcome just because he encouraged his students to do their best. I know how vital it is to take risk and push yourself. Through makeup I have the opportunity to bring those same elements out of any individual by helping them to see their beauty first inwardly and enhancing their beauty outwardly.
Millicent, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’ve always considered myself to be unique and different, whether it was cutting up some jeans or putting safety pins on a t-shirt. Being able to be true to who I am has always been important to me. Also, because of my Nigerian background, my eyes were opened to the world of art and fashion. While working for the Department of Family & Children’s Services, I developed a deeper passion and joy for makeup when I decided to assist young girls for homecoming and prom. From that moment, I knew I was passionate about giving back through making others feel beautiful.
Tulip Eyes Makeup Artistry was founded in 2010 where I began providing different services. I was able to connect with people on another level which embodies innovation and excitement. Life should be full of adventure and Makeup is FUN!
I’m most proud of my cosmetic line T.E.C. which stands for Tulip Eyes Cosmetics. T.E.C.’s vision is freedom and unity. It’s important to be able to escape from the confinements of life’s restrictions especially with this “new” normal across the world. My products empower you to express yourself with creativeness and confidence, a bold hot pink lipstick (Sugar Twin) or a soft modest pink lip gloss (Poster Girl). I want my business to match one’s personality and inspire a call for action that will unify women. I’m creating a sisterhood through my brand. As young girls and women, we still struggle with self-esteem and identity issues. Makeup unites us on an even level where judgement has no way to gain access.
How’d you think through whether to sell directly on your own site or through a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc.
I sell my products on my website at www.teccosmetics.com. There are some many DIY website builders that are great and convenient for small business owners like me; as well as affordable. I’m happy with the website I’ve built, and I know as my businesses continue to grow that I’ll be able to do more on a larger scale.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
I keep in touch with my clients via email and advertising. There are many ways to foster brand loyalty. One way I foster brand loyalty is client selfies, I want my clients to know that they are important to me and I appreciate their business. Sometimes, I may have an order ready for shipping and I will add a free item to show my thanks and appreciation. Then there are other times, I like to get feedback to ensure my clients are enjoying their products.
