We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Miller The Muse a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Miller The Muse, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today One of our favorite things to hear about is stories around the nicest thing someone has done for someone else – what’s the nicest thing someone has ever done for you?
A few weeks ago I was asked to join an online competition. It was a “March Madness” for artists, so we were competing song-for-song against each other. And I join the room. I’m listening to the other artists and I’m thinking…”These are all rappers… I do R&B, but whatever. I GOT this!”
It;s time for our round and my opponent goes before me. Praise is pouring in for this guy. I mean like, flooding the room in the form of thousands of flame and rocket ship and applause emojis. The DJ is all into commenting on how cool the artists sound is. Then it’s my turn. And…crickets. No seriously, virtual crickets, and then the BIGGEST “BOOOOOOO” you could possibly see online. People were saying my song was “trash” and if they didn’t say it with words, they said it with actual trash can emojis. It was surreal. Thousands of people saying my music was absolute garbage. Needless to say, I lost.
To say I was embarrassed would be the biggest understatement of the century. LOL. I was mortified. I logged off and gave myself 10 minutes to sulk. And then I started singing… just acapella in my house. And I was reminded of my star, and my gift and really felt more compelled than ever to really “make it,” you know? My focus since has been in overdrive.
So ironically, the kindest thing anyone has ever done for me was humble me. Now I want to rise more than ever.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Music has always been my thing. My dad was a DJ and introduced me to all kinds of music. I’ve been hooked my whole life. And discovered really early on that I was a singer; an artist. And use my gift to inspire others through my music and my imagery. I hope that women see me and my journey and use that as encouragement to be and free themselves of those imaginary limitations; a muse.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I really had to learn to stop caring what people think about me or what I’m doing. And when I say people, I mean everyone: friends, family, foes. Once I started to let go of that, I hurt a lot of feelings by not people pleasing, but I found more of myself. I’m still on that journey
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part is legit seeing people resonate with things I’ve created: a song, a video, an image. It’s a reminder of path and affirmation of my purpose. It means everything that people are touched by what I do.
