Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Miley Carterr. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Miley, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Other than the one I’m currently working on? Ha! I would honestly say my documentary that I released in 2016 titled “Revive: Becoming Miley Carterr” which also ties into my 1st book I wrote. The documentary took a year and a half to create. I scrapped my original version of how I wanted it to be after watching Beyoncé’s “Life is but a dream”. I knew then I wanted it to be as authentic as possible instead of me going into a full blown studio, hiring others to come in and dictate and control my vision. I directed & edited it all on my own. I was very popular prior to my documentary but after i graduated in 2015 I started to get nearly double to triple the attention I had before…I was going somewhere and I knew I had a way bigger story to tell than people even realized, It was also a lot of people’s first time actually seeing who I actually was beyond the entertainment version of me. After it was released I received tons of comments, dms and post of everyone watching it on their tvs and telling me how impactful my story actually was to their own lives.
Miley, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Well…my name is Miley but most people call me “Miley Carterr” lol. I was one of the FIRST few transgender black girls on YouTube to obtain a huge following organically. I started my channel 12 years ago (yup, I’m an OG). I used my platform to entertain, educate, give advice and showcase my life in ways most would have never ever even done. A lot of people know me for my personality & how courageous I am. I always knew I would be in this industry lol I honestly fell into it though, somebody had asked me to record giving them advice — I did and it went up from there. However, my initial video was of me acting. I was improving as if I was in a scary movie… yeah I know crazy right?
I have written multiple books, appeared on multiple tv shows, films & more!
I will say.. a lot is changing currently with my brand. I’m in the middle of rebranding in a major way which will force me to have to conquer a new audience. Haha, I’ll give you guys the inside scoop… over the pass 5 years I’ve been curating a visual film….which led me into falling in love with writing & making music as early as two years ago. YES, ya girl is stepping into a whole different industry. I actually started taking vocal lessons a year and a half ago, I’m so thankful for those lessons because they’ve helped me also grow as someone new who’s curating this particular form of art.
I don’t want people to get it misunderstood either… I have no desire to be called an artist, I’m a creator — I CREATE. Let’s be clear I am a trained dancer, author, actress and now singer! I’m excited for this new journey and hopefully you guys will soon be able to enjoy the music I’ve been creating.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Honestly? LIKE, COMMENT, SHARE… that’s the BEST & CHEAPEST way to support your favorite creative in a time where social media has a strong hold on people’s earnings. You may not be able to purchase from them but if you share that persons content it’ll grow their audience and you just may lead a new supporter that’ll financially support them to them!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me personally it’s seeing that what you do is changing the world even if it’s at a small level or massive capacity! Hearing how you’ve changed someone’s life with what you’re doing is VERY rewarding and makes me so warm inside.
