We recently connected with Miles Woodworth and have shared our conversation below.
Miles, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
After graduating college with a BFA in Film and Digital Video, I returned to my hometown and began writing screenplays in the hopes that I would sell them. I isolated myself in my childhood bedroom and studied screenplays and screenwriting books. Five original screenplays later and no promising leads, I came to the realization that I had no solid connections in the industry and, as you know, that’s everything. I then started to reach out to all the local creative agencies, asking for any job opportunities. Those who got back to me responded with, “we’re not hiring right now” or “we’ll get back to you”. I was lost. I was at the point where I needed any work. I finally got a job working in the back of a restaurant as a dishwasher. Every night I came home with greasy food and a 12-pack. Then what felt like the longest part of my life suddenly ended with a phone call telling me that the restaurant was shutting down. I was jobless, again. My editing programs from college expired. I had no camera. I was running out of money. My student loans were coming in. My girlfriend broke up with me. I didn’t have anything. Then my parents started charging me rent. I needed to get my life together. If nobody wants to hire me, then I’m going to start my own business, I thought. I grabbed my computer and started writing a business plan.
I started my company in 2013. My plan at first was to offer local businesses social media, video, photo, and website development. Three years in, I niched into just focusing on video production, and fast forward to present day, at the core of my business stands one mission: find the story, film it in the most compelling way, and weave in a captivating script. Looking back, I achieved my original goal of selling screenplays, just in a different way. I am fortunate enough to now be able to write, direct, film, and produce brand videos for some of the greatest people I know.
Miles, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Since childhood, I’ve always had a fascination with the world of filmmaking. When feature films began releasing behind-the-scenes segments on DVDs— that’s what really interested me, sometimes more so than the movies themselves. Around 8th grade, I found my parents’ old video camera in the basement. I thought it was the coolest thing in the world. In those years, I gathered a group of friends, and together we embarked on a creative journey to film anything we could. It became a means to escape the boredom of a small New England town. This collaborative storytelling continued through high school and into college, evolving into a method for connecting with new people and documenting the evolving chapters of my life.
This evolution eventually led me to establish my own Video Production company. My creative process hinges on immersing myself in my clients’ brands, channeling 100% dedication to crafting cohesive videos that tell their stories to potential clients. Striving to become different has become my passion, both personally and professionally, as I aspire to produce videos that stand out.
Have you ever had to pivot?
In the early stages of my business journey, I was less about collaborating with others and more focused on growing my business by myself. I believed that to succeed, I had to seize every job opportunity and view fellow creatives as competition. However, a few years into my business a pivotal moment happened when I crossed paths with a motivational speaker who would soon become a close friend and he shared with me,”Miles, it’s all about collaboration over competition.” This simple yet profound belief created a transformation in both my mindset and my business approach. I began to engage with other creatives, and the results were significant—a rise in business and a newfound sense of fulfillment. It was during this time that I met Raya, a photographer that would become my life partner, who also helped me scale my business by niching down, focusing on exclusively working with brands.
I once believed that there was only one way to run my business. Yet, through the power of openness and collaboration with like-minded individuals, I discovered a whole new perspective on entrepreneurship.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
One of the most rewarding aspects of creating brand videos is in the post-production phase, particularly in the editing. For me, editing is where the magic happens. It’s a realm of unlimited creative exploration where I can really shape the story. The process of weaving together videos, voiceovers, interviews, and music into a cohesive final product never fails to amaze me. There’s a beauty in taking a concept and transforming it into a final video. Yet, what truly motivates me as a creative is sharing the finished product with my clients. Hearing their words of affirmation—”You nailed it!”—and witnessing their excitement as they recognize that their vision came to life. Capturing the essence of someone else’s business through videography is not easy, but the sense of fulfillment that comes from bringing their ideas to life is what drives me.
