Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Miles Elliot. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Miles, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I had a really good teacher who taught me technique in a very practical way and a mentor who has helped me build my confidence and understand my values as an artist. I am still learning and have so much to learn but procrastination has been an obstacle for me and something I am still working on.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am an artist who started painting and making art when I was 11 years old. I recently completed my first large scale body of work using mixed media; charcoal, acrylic paint and collage. I was inspired by abandoned spaces and “trash”–objects that people discard because they no longer want or need them. The body of work is set in an abandoned paper mill and has collages made up of digital and hand drawn items that have been thrown away, mixed with drawn imagery from books and movies that have inspired me over the years. My goal is to have a show at an art gallery next year and start on a new body of work in the next couple of months.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think cities providing more opportunities for artists of all ages to paint murals, make sculptures, installations, do preforming arts, music, etc. to make our cities more interesting, beautiful and bring people and artists together would be a good place to start.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Seeing your ideas come to life and having your ideas go from your head onto paper or canvas. And then seeing someone connect with your art and feel inspired or moved by it.
