Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Miles Brown. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Miles thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later
I truly wish I could have started my business much sooner. I wish I just knew what I wanted to do sooner. My grandma would always tell me “Miles you need to use your voice” and I never knew how I would do that. I was working but didn’t know that my passion to teach and to speak could be my business. I had been speaking in church and with my fathers business for years before I knew how to take those skills and turn it into a paycheck. I remember I was about 28 years old, working full time on my job and part time with my dad’s business, wanting something different but doing nothing to live what I wanted. Truthfully, I was being complacent in my life at that time. I didn’t break out of complacency until I realized I could get paid to speak. I don’t even know how I learned about this speaking industry, but in learning about the industry I learned about myself and one of my keynote talks was born out of that discovery. Eventually I went and paid for a coaching program that was good but not good for me. Then a few months later I found a program and a community that would give me all that I needed to get started and to see some level of success.. But If I would have found all of this sooner, I’d be further along in my career, I could have helped so many more people, and ultimately I believe I would be a different even better person. Because Success requires you to become the kind of person who can be successful. Each level of success will require you to turn into a person who can handle that new level.

Miles, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
So ultimately I use my voice to create positive change. Some call it motivational speaking. I started speaking in church, that is where I got my skill and stage presence from. I also teach people how they can speak in front of an audience. COMMUNICATION is my business. Many people do not realize that communication is key to so many things in life. From getting brand awareness and getting your product/service/message in front of a new audience, to selling any and everything, to leading any kind of group, to relationships, and more, so much, especially for entrepreneurs, is based on how well someone can communicate. But many are afraid to talk in public, don’t know how to write a talk, don’t know how to give a talk, have no stage presence, don’t know how to get paid to give that talk. So I teach all of that and more. Allowing people to have success in their fields. in many different fields. Growing up, nobody told me that people get paid thousands of dollars to give a speech on all kinds of topics, then after their speech they also get paid on selling their books, programs, and products. When I did learn about it, I thought you had to speak and sound like everybody, I didn’t know how to find my own voice. I certainly did not know how to take a speech and turn it into multiple different products that can all generate income for me. So now that I know, I made it my business to not only do that for myself, but show others how they can do it too. But what sets me apart is my commitment to doing good. Before I speak, I give. When I am not speaking, I am still giving. After I speak I am still giving. I give as much as I can. I buy food, go to gas stations and pay for strangers gas, pay bills for my followers, just always finding a way to give. I want to be known for how much I gave. Business is fun, but truthfully helping others is more fulfilling.

Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
I did something that I don’t recommend any speaker do. EVER! I spoke about something I simply didn’t know about. Words are powerful, speaking without knowing what you are talking about could lead people down a bad path, and it could also leave you extremely embarrassed when what you said does not happen. I remember when I was just getting started and I read a ton of material and books. So I had a lot of head knowledge but I did not have the experience to say if what I learn from reading and mentors was true. But I gave a presentation to a group of entrepreneurs about why they should all take speaking engagements. I told them how people view you when you are on a stage, I told them how its easier to connect to a captive audience than it is one stranger at a time, and I told them that as long as you do a good job when speaking that somebody in the audience would be willing to buy whatever you have to sale. But here is the thing… I HAD NEVER EXPERIANCED THAT PART ABOUT SELLING! I never had someone come to me and buy anything from me after I spoke. Up until that point I never had even a t-shirt to sell. I was hoping that what I read was as true for me as it was for people in books about communication. Do you know how embarrassing it would be to have a room full of people who could use my service, I tell them how they will get paid but then I don’t get paid. Plus I was in a tough spot when I took that speaking engagement, I needed what I was saying to be true. When I got done speaking something amazing happened, someone came up to me ready to spend $1,000 on my services. In fact I made a few thousand dollars in that room when I got done speaking.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
There are plenty of books that have helped me. Believe it or not one of the most influential books for my business and how I conduct business is the Holy Bible. The bible has tons of principals that will help you in business. Like how to treat people, that is important because people do business with people, not with businesses. Or how the bible says to invest in 7-8 ventures because that way you always have one that is doing well even if some of the others aren’t. The command to be as wise as serpents but as soft as doves. Meaning we do need to learn and understand completely how business works, we should not allow someone to trick us, but at the same time we should not use our knowledge to do harm to others. And to never let money be my God. Money is a tool, just a tool. Get it, but not at the cost of hurting people, and never depend on it for happiness or satisfaction. Money is to be used we are not to be slaves to it. Many people fall into that, where money means everything, when that happens there is no telling what kind of evil might be done.
