We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mikyla Baker. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mikyla below.
Mikyla, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I’ve always been very much into beauty. Throughout middle school and high school I loved messing around with lashes, nails, and makeup. While in college I was working a job that I HATED. I’m very thankful for it, but it was a boring office job. I would always go and get my lashes done faithfully and one day at work the thought of me running my own lash business would not get out of my head. Literally all day. I prayed and talked to God, stepped out on faith, quit my job, took a lash class and because of prayer and hard work I’m here today. Faith without works is dead.

Mikyla, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am 23 years old and I am from the small city of Thomasville, Ga. I attended Thomas University to receive an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts. I attended Valdosta State University to receive a Bachelor’s of Health Sciences degree and this is where I pledged AKA. Now I am currently attending Mercer University for an accelerated nursing program, all while running my business and being a lash tech. I feel as though this has taught me time-management and balance. I’ve been able to connect with so many of my clients, especially my nurses and girls in college. We feed off of each other. I’m a therapist and a lash tech all in one. I’m able to give them advice and feedback about things such as school and everyday life, however my clients feed into me as well. I’ve created so many strong bonds with a lot of them and that’s the best part of it all. Being able to turn someone’s bad day into a good one, being a listening ear for someone, just making someone feel better than they were before coming to see me.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to put the idea of “I’m gonna buy it because I’ll make it right back anyways” out of my head! Lashing is good, fast money and it’s so easy to get wrapped up into it all. My spending habits was CRAZY in the beginning of lashing. I would get so use to making $300-$1300 every single day that I would never check a bank account. All I did was splurge. Then we entered a pandemic and things were slow for that time being. That was a big eye opener because that saying our grandparents told us as kids is so true. “Always have money set aside for a rainy day.”
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I had a job that I was working on campus for about 2 years. Prior to lashing my spending habits weren’t bad at all, therefore I had money saved up to pay for my class. As far as my lash supplies and bed, THANK GOD FOR MOTHERS. My mom is my biggest supporter no matter what (besides my sister). She put some money into my account one day and told me that she was investing into me for my business. I proceeded to order everything that was needed and made it all back plus some more in less than 24 hours, and that was only from deposit money.
