Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Miko Kovacevic. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Miko, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
Starting out as a makeup artist wasn’t easy— When I first started as a makeup artist I often worked for free to build my portfolio. It was challenging, costly and back then it was time consuming. I felt as if i was putting so much work in, but was getting nothing in return. However, this process allowed me to gain experience, meet new people who were turning point in my career as a MUA.
When Covid hit us by surprise, i was stuck home and knew that was my opportunity to work on myself and build my portfolio.
I was able to build a good portfolio and began working with Serbian celebrities, the opportunities multiplied and the money started rolling in. I am able to earn a full time living from my work, however at the moment I have another job, so I am balancing the two. It’s the Aquarius in me. :)
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As a passionate creative makeup artist, I ventured into the beauty industry with a dream and a brush. The journey was anything but smooth; as i said I began by offering my services for free, honing my craft on friends and local gigs. However, my dedication paid off when I started working with celebrities, transforming their looks and building a captivating portfolio. Now, as a professional, I bring artistic vision and expertise to every project, turning faces into masterpieces.
Building on my success, I launched my own brand of lipsticks, combining my artistic vision with high-quality ingredients to create a product line that reflects my passion for beauty and creativity.
However, despite the initial success and the enthusiastic reception of my lipstick brand, I had to make the difficult decision to pause production. Having a second job, and the demands of my thriving makeup artistry career left me with insufficient time to dedicate to the brand’s growth. Balancing my passion for hands-on creative work with the logistical challenges of running a business required more time and energy than I could spare.
What sets me apart from other makeup artists is my versatility in creating any type of makeup look, offering high-quality products, and maintaining a friendly, approachable demeanor—I even provide free makeup services to those in need.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
As a makeup artist, my ultimate goal is to make people happy. Seeing the joy and confidence on my clients’ faces when they witness their transformation is incredibly rewarding. Their happiness and excitement is what drives me to continue perfecting my craft and delivering exceptional results every day. The great feedback I receive from friends and family further motivates me to push my boundaries and continuously improve. Their support and encouragement remind me of the positive impact my work can have, fueling my passion and dedication to making every client feel beautiful and confident.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
To grow my client base, I focus on building strong relationships with each client, ensuring they leave satisfied and eager to share their experiences. This word-of-mouth marketing has been invaluable in expanding my reach. Additionally, I offer discounts for future visits and extend special offers to friends of my clients, creating a network of happy clients who trust my services and continue to return.
Beyond word-of-mouth and discounts, I also leverage social media to showcase my work and engage with potential clients. By consistently posting my portfolio and client transformations, I attract new followers who may convert into loyal customers. Moreover, I participate in local events and collaborate with other professionals in the beauty industry, further establishing my presence and credibility. These strategies combined help me steadily grow my clientele and maintain a thriving makeup artistry business.
