Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mikkita Moore. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Mikkita, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
Mikkita L. Moore’s journey from idea to execution is a story of resilience, vision, and an unyielding drive to help others—whether that’s through real estate, her nonprofit, or her writing. Raised on the South Side of Chicago, Mikkita faced incredible challenges early in life. Becoming a mother at just 14 years old, she had to navigate trauma, domestic violence, and the absence of a father. However, rather than letting these obstacles define her, she used her experiences to fuel her personal growth and the ways she could give back to her community.
Her entrepreneurial journey started with an idea: The Art of Transparency—a nonprofit aimed at healing individuals and communities through resources and support for overcoming trauma. But that vision quickly expanded beyond just healing—it became about empowering others to change their lives, whether through writing, real estate, or motivational speaking. The road to making this idea a reality wasn’t simple, but Mikkita’s personal journey of resilience and self-discovery would be the cornerstone for all of her future endeavors.
Step 1: The Spark of an Idea
Mikkita’s path to creating The Art of Transparency and her real estate career began after years of writing books and speaking about her personal struggles. She’d written multiple works, including The Letter, From the Invisible Daughter and The Cause and Effect of The Invisible Daughter, which reflected her own trauma, healing process, and transformation. These books weren’t just a personal testimony; they were a beacon of hope for others. But as she became more involved in sharing her story, Mikkita realized that she wanted to reach even more people.
At the same time, Mikkita was beginning to explore real estate. Her personal experience of buying her first home in 2022 had been eye-opening. The emotional and financial aspects of homeownership were overwhelming, and she saw an opportunity to use her story to guide others through the process. In real estate, as in her other endeavors, she could combine her personal story, emotional intelligence, and expertise to help others achieve something they might have thought was out of reach.
Step 2: From Vision to Action
Once Mikkita had her vision clear, the next step was breaking it down into actionable steps. She started with The Art of Transparency and the nonprofit sector. She knew that in order to create lasting change, she would need to build a platform that supported individuals who had experienced trauma, just as she had. Researching the nonprofit world, understanding the legal framework, and forming a clear mission and vision became the first steps.
At the same time, Mikkita knew that her growing interest in real estate would need to be pursued with just as much determination. She began studying the market, learning the ins and outs of real estate from both a professional and emotional perspective. It wasn’t just about selling homes; it was about understanding the emotional journey of first-time buyers, guiding sellers through tough decisions, and helping investors make smart choices. She joined Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate and became a member of the Christina King Rogers Realty Group, where she was able to blend her expertise in emotional intelligence with a strong understanding of market trends to provide top-tier service to her clients.
Step 3: Building Credibility
As a new business owner and real estate agent, Mikkita faced the challenge of building credibility. She had already been an author, motivational speaker, and mentor, but now she had to expand her influence into new areas. Her personal story was a powerful tool, but she also had to develop her technical skills in real estate and nonprofit management.
For The Art of Transparency, she started connecting with other organizations, forming partnerships, and securing grants and donations. She built a team and began providing resources to individuals in need of healing, using her own story to show them what was possible.
For her real estate business, Mikkita worked tirelessly to develop her market knowledge, network with potential clients, and learn the intricacies of buying, selling, and investing in homes. She learned quickly that success in real estate wasn’t just about transactions—it was about building trust and relationships with people, understanding their dreams and fears, and guiding them through one of the most significant decisions of their lives.
Step 4: Juggling Multiple Ventures
Mikkita didn’t just stop with the nonprofit or real estate. She had to juggle multiple ventures at once, all while raising five children. There were countless late nights spent planning, writing, and coaching, not to mention navigating the highs and lows of running a business. Sometimes, the days felt too short to do everything she wanted to accomplish. But Mikkita never wavered. She remained committed to her mission of making a difference—whether through helping someone buy their first home, teaching someone how to write their story, or guiding them through trauma recovery.
With The Art of Transparency, she offered workshops, retreats, and one-on-one support, helping people break free from the mental and emotional chains that held them back. Through Invisible Daughter, LLC, she coached aspiring writers, teaching them how to harness the power of their own stories to heal and inspire others. In real estate, she used her own journey to guide others in making homeownership a reality, helping them navigate the complex emotions tied to buying a home and finding a place to truly call their own.
Step 5: Overcoming Obstacles and Expanding
As Mikkita’s business ventures grew, she encountered new challenges. Each success brought its own hurdles—whether it was scaling the nonprofit, managing real estate transactions, or expanding her speaking and coaching services. But she met each challenge with the same resilience that had carried her through life’s toughest moments. There were moments of doubt, financial struggles, and moments of exhaustion, but Mikkita pushed forward, knowing that her work was making a profound impact.
Her dedication began to pay off. The Art of Transparency reached more people, and her nonprofit grew in both influence and reach. As a real estate agent, she became known for her deep emotional intelligence and commitment to her clients’ success. Her reputation as someone who genuinely cared for others’ well-being, combined with her growing knowledge in the real estate market, made her an invaluable resource for anyone looking to navigate the complexities of homeownership.
Step 6: Reflection and Impact
Looking back on her journey, Mikkita sees the incredible transformation in her own life. She went from a young mother facing seemingly insurmountable obstacles to a powerful force in the world of real estate, writing, speaking, and nonprofit leadership. She is a testament to the fact that no matter how difficult life may seem, resilience, vision, and hard work can lead to profound change—not just for yourself, but for everyone you touch.
Through The Art of Transparency, real estate, and her writing, Mikkita is able to inspire, heal, and empower others to overcome their own struggles and achieve success. Today, she continues to balance all of her roles—author, motivational speaker, nonprofit CEO, real estate agent, and most importantly, mother—using each of her experiences to empower those around her.
Her story is a reminder that while the road to success may be filled with challenges, it is never too late to heal, grow, and make an impact.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Mikkita L. Moore, a passionate advocate for personal growth, healing, and empowerment. My journey has been shaped by resilience, vision, and the desire to make a lasting impact on others. Raised on the South Side of Chicago, I became a mother at just 14 years old, and my life has been a constant testament to overcoming adversity and using the challenges I’ve faced as fuel for growth. Today, I wear many hats—author, motivational speaker, real estate professional, and the founder and CEO of The Art of Transparency, NFP—but at the core of it all is my mission to help others heal, grow, and transform their lives, no matter the obstacles they’ve encountered.
How I Got Into This Work
My path to where I am today wasn’t a straight line. It was shaped by personal trials—suicidal thoughts, domestic violence, and growing up without a father—that led me to self-discovery and healing. I began writing early on as a way to process and make sense of the trauma in my life. Writing became my outlet for self-expression, healing, and connection with others. Over the years, I wrote over 15 books, including The Letter, From the Invisible Daughter and The Cause and Effect of The Invisible Daughter, where I openly share my story of pain, healing, and growth. These books became not just a form of personal catharsis but a way to offer hope to others walking similar paths.
However, it wasn’t enough just to write about my experiences. I knew I needed to create a platform for others to heal too, which led me to start The Art of Transparency, NFP—a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing resources and support to help individuals and communities conquer trauma and thrive. Through this nonprofit, we offer workshops, mentorship programs, and resources that empower individuals to confront their pasts, heal, and transform their futures.
I also found a passion for real estate, which began after purchasing my first home in 2022. I understood the emotional and financial complexities of homeownership firsthand, and I wanted to use that experience to guide others through the process. As a Realtor with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate and a member of the Christina King Rogers Realty Group, I combine my emotional intelligence with deep market knowledge to help first-time buyers, sellers, and investors navigate the real estate journey successfully.

Ultimately, my brand is all about healing, empowerment, and transformation—for you, for me, and for all of us.

Have you ever had to pivot?
There was a time in my life when I had to make a significant pivot—one that shifted the entire focus of my career and personal journey. For years, I had been working relentlessly on multiple ventures: leading The Art of Transparency, coaching writers, and speaking about personal healing. But amid all of this, I was neglecting an essential part of myself: my own mental health and healing. I had poured so much energy into helping others that I lost sight of taking care of myself.
I came to a realization that I needed to step back, focus on my own healing, and reevaluate where I wanted to put my energy. It was a difficult decision, but I knew it was necessary. I made the choice to step away from many of the projects I had been working on and devote an entire year to real estate and focusing on my mental health. It wasn’t just a career pivot—it was a life pivot.
At first, it felt almost like a failure. I felt like I was walking away from everything I had worked so hard to build. But in reality, I was creating space for my own growth and healing. I used this time to focus on learning everything I could about real estate, while also diving deep into therapy, personal reflection, and rediscovering who I was outside of being a business owner, author, or speaker.
During this year, I gained invaluable insights into myself and my career. I realized how important it was to create balance in my life, to protect my mental and emotional well-being, and to recognize when to step back in order to move forward. This time of reflection helped me grow as a person, and it also gave me the foundation to approach my real estate career with fresh perspective and renewed purpose.
As I ventured deeper into real estate, I discovered a profound connection between this field and my broader mission of empowerment. Real estate wasn’t just about buying and selling homes—it was about helping people make life-changing decisions. It was about guiding others through emotional and financial challenges, just as I had done through trauma recovery in my nonprofit work.
Real estate became a new way to serve others, but this time, I was doing it in a way that honored my own well-being. I was able to balance my passion for helping others with the need to take care of myself. This pivot not only strengthened my career but also gave me a deeper sense of purpose. It reminded me that in order to make a difference in others’ lives, I needed to start by investing in my own healing and growth.
Now, I am able to bring a deeper level of emotional intelligence and personal insight into my real estate practice. My journey taught me the importance of self-care, and I’ve learned that it’s okay to take a step back when needed, in order to move forward stronger than ever.
This pivot was a reminder that life doesn’t always follow a straight path, and sometimes, the most important thing we can do is trust ourselves and our process. Life, career, and healing are all interconnected, and by prioritizing our own mental health, we can show up more powerfully for the people and projects we care about most.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the most important lessons I had to unlearn was the cliche “fake it until you make it.” For years, I adhered to that mentality, believing that if I just pushed through, pretended to be strong, and kept up appearances, eventually everything would fall into place. I thought that showing up as an “untouchable” figure someone who had it all together was the key to success. But the truth is, I was losing myself in the process.
The backstory goes like this: I was juggling multiple roles—leading The Art of Transparency, coaching writers, speaking at events, and constantly striving to be a source of strength for others. I would pour all of my energy into helping those around me, sharing my personal experiences, offering guidance, and being the “pillar” people could rely on. But in the midst of doing that, I wasn’t pouring into myself. I didn’t take the time to check in with myself, to nurture my own emotional and mental health, or to acknowledge my own needs. Instead, I put on this mask of confidence and strength, pretending that everything was fine, even when it wasn’t.
I felt like I had to keep up the illusion that I was always “on,” always available to others, always the one with the answers. This mindset led me to neglect my own healing and self-care. The result? I was physically, emotionally, and mentally drained. I was losing the connection to my own needs and desires, and the constant “faking it” left me feeling more disconnected from my true self.
The turning point came when I realized that by pretending to be invincible, I wasn’t just masking my pain; I was also hindering my ability to help others in a meaningful way. I wasn’t showing up as my authentic self, and that started to affect the quality of my work, my relationships, and my overall well-being.
I had to unlearn that it was okay to not always have it all together. I needed to embrace vulnerability, ask for help when needed, and take time to replenish my own energy. In learning to be authentic with myself, I was able to truly show up for others in a way that felt aligned with my values. It wasn’t about pretending to be perfect anymore; it was about being honest about my struggles, accepting my imperfections, and allowing myself to be human.
Unlearning the “fake it until you make it” mentality allowed me to start healing. I began prioritizing my own mental health, setting boundaries, and giving myself the grace to not always have everything figured out. This shift in perspective has been transformative, not only in my personal life but also in my business and the way I serve my clients. I’m now able to show up as my true self, fully present and authentic, which allows me to connect with others on a deeper level and help them on their own journeys.
The lesson I’ve learned is that authenticity and vulnerability are far more powerful than perfection and pretending. When you show up as you truly are, flaws and all, that’s when you truly start to make an impact—both on your own life and on the lives of others.
