We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mikey Massaro a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Mikey, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My parents were the parents that always supported a dream and did the best to make sure we were able, even when we may not have been financially able. Mom, specifically was the mom that you dreamt of having. Taught you the hard lessons but never let you feel like you were without. She always had dinner on the table, always made sure you had clean clothes, and always made sure that you knew you were loved. I never felt like I wanted for more and I don’t mean physical things or material items. Dad was the guy who always did things as best as they could be done, or better. When I was young and looking to make a few dollars I started mowing the lawn. Little did I know that every blade of grass had to be the exact same. I hated it at first and being young I didn’t realize the importance of the lesson being taught. I can honestly say that now being a hairdresser for this many years, that has made the most impact on my career thus far. Do things the right way, the best you can, the first time.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I’m a hairstylist in the southlake area, and have been in the industry now for 18 years. I specialize in multiple things including Balayage and Extensions but I just about do anything that comes to hairstyling. I’ve been focused this year on obtaining certifications for key areas of what I do in the salon. I stared out training at TONI&GUY and have done multiple programs and training technique trainings to further my knowledge since. I am a Master Stylist in my salon as well as Salon Educator. I work hard, always strive for perfection and work hard to achieve the best possible results for my clients. I love to be a part of the process and help you feel your best. I love to teach and help orders in the salon, and I’m always willing to share my knowledge and challenge growth. Something in me thrives off of that. I’m currently working at Puresana Salon in Southlake and love the team I am a part of. It’s rare to find what we have here and let’s just say I’m grateful.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
Yes I would definitely choose it again! There’s something special about sitting someone in the chair and being able to turn them into exactly who they want to physically be in a matter of a few hours. Whether it’s a bad moment in life and a need to feel better, an engagement, a baby shower, or just a look change. That process is something special, and one that I love to be a part of.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe the thing that helped me build my reputation in the market is my attention to detail, my strive for always making things perfect, and simply that I listen to my client and do my best to give them exactly what they’re looking for. It doesn’t always mean hair by the way, sometimes it’s just an ear, a hug, or a moment to relax.
