Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mikey Freshcobar. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Mikey, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s kick things off with talking about how you serve the underserved, because in our view this is one of the most important things the small business community does for society – by serving those who the giant corporations ignore, small business helps create a more inclusive and just world for all of us.
As of late, the mission for SackReligious Klothing Kompany has “shifted” if you will. Since August 2023, we have been hosting free celebrity basketball games & built certain giveaways around it! Our first event was a backpack drive for the Frayser community where we gave away over 170 filled backpacks along with our sponsors: Williams Bounce & More bringing out bounce houses for the kids & Brotherz Wings & Things providing the food for over 250 guests. We recently just finished off the year of 2024 with a toy drive & our 4th celebrity basketball game! The city deserves these types of events. It’s so much going on & at the same time taken away from the community. Times are hard. I’m just doing my part by trying to bring joy & fun back with the help of friends. Our games are more than just a game. It’s like a family reunion lol we eat, the kids play & dance, and we get a great basketball game. The city need more smiles & love!

Mikey, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As the great Jay-Z once said, “Allow me to reintroduce myself…,” I’m a father, a son, a protector, a brother, a friend..a fashion designer, a business owner, a philanthropist..depending on who you ask, I’m a man of many titles..but they all define who Mikey Freshcobar is. I’ve always been into fashion growing up but never thought I’d be this deep into it. I think my love of fashion & music goes hand in hand. Many may (or may not) know I did music for some years. Rapping was really just a hobby. Something to do with the guys in our spare time until we got good at it a few years later. I started on a project titled SackReligious. During that time I was studying some of the greats & their albums: Lauryn Hill X The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, Lil Wayne x The Carter 2, Young Jeezy x Thug Motivation 101, Nipsey Hussle x Victory Lap, & some Sadé. Also watched a lot of Nipsey interviews, but it wasn’t until I saw NLE Choppa & Steve Stoute interview & they stressed the importance of merch for an artist. That night I was looking for a logo & how to get some tees made. Dropped the preorder for the shirts & sold out instantly. My fiancé had an idea to make it an official brand & the rest is history!
SackReligious Klothing Kompany offers a wide variety of products & what separates us from most is that MOSTLY EVERYTHING is 100% custom, 1 of 1 pieces. The reasons being, I feel clothing is a form of expression & I hate going to the mall. The mall is so limited. I remember a time the gamma 12s (Jordan’s) released and I was at the mall looking for a shirt, finally found one & this guy walked right behind me & grabbed the same shirt. I knew then something had to give, online shopping was it! Once I started my brand, I vowed to keep making customs. Five years in & we haven’t done the same design yet thanks to the freedom of creativity when it comes to the people.
I, as a business owner, have a lot to be proud of! From serving the community, helping kids, donating, giveaways, personal goals & milestones, & not only meeting but fulfilling orders for some of the most known celebrities in Memphis like:Don Trip, OG Boo Dirty, Fresco Trey, HitKidd, Real Red, TripStar, AR The Mermaid, the list goes on!

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I definitely have a few books & videos that I would say had a significant impact during this journey. One being Nipsey Hussle. Back in 2018, I know I watched EVERY interview he did. His mindset was amazing & what I aspired to be. From the clothing to the business man, he had the recipe and gave it away to whoever listened. It was also in his music. Starlito as well. He’s one of my favorite rappers but outside of the music, he’ll post a book he’s reading or his collection of books & I’ll follow suit & read the same: Rich Dad, Poor Dad..No Excuses: The Power of Self Discipline, Psychology of Money, Virgil Abloh’s Free Game

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think what helped build my reputation is word of mouth. I’m almost certain it is honestly. Most of my customers are friends of friends. That’s pretty much how it goes, especially in Memphis. My quality & personal interaction is what keeps them coming back. Every order is special & I treat it as such. I personally make every delivery, follow up, thank you cards, packaging is rare. It’s just a different experience when you shop with SackReligious Klothing that you can’t help but tell a friend.
