We recently connected with Mikell Reed Carroll and have shared our conversation below.
Mikell, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
As an avid pageant competitor, I had been helping others prepare for pageants for years, for free.
It was during one call with a woman, where I spent an hour of time away from my family, late at night due to a time zone difference and listened to her telling me about spending thousands on coaches while I was giving her my expert opinion for free, that I decided I should start my own pageant coaching business..
My desire to help women become their very best and shine their unique gifts without spending a fortune and speeding up the pageant learning curve for them, something I wish I had.
So several months after crowning my successor as International Ms USA in 2021, I announced the start of my business, Carroll Crown Consulting, a full service pageant coaching and consulting firm.
Mikell, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have over 27 years of experience in the pageant industry, from competing to judging and styling.
I have held multiple state, national and international titles, from Mrs. Maine International, Mrs. DC Tourism, to International Ms USA, Ms USA Universe and World’s Mrs Tourism.
I am also an attorney by education and use my strategic mind to really help competitors strategize their preparations, branding and Platform Development to suit themselves as well as matching them to the right systems to showcase their unique gifts.
I have been named a Top 20 Best Pageant Coaches of 2023 and Top 10 Best Pageant Interview Coaches of 2024 by Pageant Planet, the leading resource for pageant contestants worldwide and have personally won multiple international and national volunteer awards.
One of the things that sets me apart from other pageant coaches, is my one-on-one attention and truly tailoring my coaching to the individual and the system they are competing in.
I am also a truly international coach, with clients across the globe and having lived abroad for over a decade on three continents.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
My reputation has grown significantly, from a practical unknown to a top rated international pageant coach.
This happened due to multiple winners in well-know national and international pageant systems and partnerships with other leading pageants within the industry.
I have trained winners of Ms Galaxy Australia, Mrs North Dakota America, Miss World International, Ms USA Universe, Mrs. Universal Petite, International Ms, International Mrs USA, International Ms USA, USOA Ms California, USOA Mrs. Pennsylvania, USOA Pennsylvania Teen, American Miss National Teen, American Miss National Young Miss, Ms New Jersey International and many others.
My advice to other business owners is to look to others in your field to collaborate, you may be surprised how it will help your business to grow.

In 2023 I received a rare disease diagnosis that required several surgeries.
I wasn’t sure how this may affect my business.
In the end my clients were incredibly supportive and actually very much helped motivate me through my recovery.
I love my clients and what I do so much, that they were actually a positive driving force in a wonderful recovery.
