We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mike Young a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Mike thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
My decision to pursue a creative path professionally stems from a deep-seated passion for music, graphic design, and filmmaking. These forms of expression have always been more than hobbies to me—they are essential parts of who I am. The joy and satisfaction I derive from creating, whether it’s composing a track, designing visuals, or crafting a film, solidified my choice to make this my career. It’s about more than making a living; it’s about enriching life with creativity and purpose.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Mike Young, also known as mikoREDD, a Memphis-based artist specializing in rap and R&B, graphic design, and filmmaking. My work emphasizes authenticity and emotional depth. In music, I focus on crafting tracks noted for their lyrical richness and high production quality. My graphic designs are clear and impactful, aimed at communicating complex messages effectively. In filmmaking, I produce visually compelling and emotionally engaging narratives. Integrating these disciplines, I aim to inspire, provoke thought, and comfort my audience, transcending traditional artistic boundaries.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being an artist for me is the freedom to pursue my passions and express myself creatively through music and art, while also having the opportunity to earn a living from it. It’s fulfilling to do what I love every day and know that my work not only satisfies my creative urges but also supports my livelihood.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
My approach to building an audience on social media is straightforward and organic. I focus on sharing my music and letting it naturally reach those who find it resonant. I believe in the quality of my work and feel that by consistently presenting my true artistic self, the right audience will gravitate towards it. My advice to those starting is to remain authentic and consistent. Let your work speak for itself, and the audience that appreciates it for what it truly is will follow.
