We were lucky to catch up with Mike Taylor recently and have shared our conversation below.
Mike, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
Most big corporations delegate their strategic and creative work to external agencies, allowing them to focus on running the business. But as an entrepreneur or leader of a fast-growing company, you’re often juggling multiple responsibilities with a limited team. Without the time or expertise to lead and outsource various aspects of building a long-term strategy and brand, it’s easy to feel stuck in a cycle of maintaining the status quo.
At Mike Taylor Consulting, we do things differently to help smaller, growing companies transform. Think of it as business strategy meets the magic of branding. We blend strategic acumen with creative flair, using storytelling through words, design, video, and digital to propel businesses forward. From uncovering your unique brand essence to crafting comprehensive growth strategies, we elevate your brand and drive tangible results.
Our approach focuses on three crucial fundamentals that successful brands use to capture minds and hearts and sustain success:
1. The Head Story: Provides logic and proof to build trust and loyalty.
2. The Heart Story: Creates an emotional connection.
3. The Guts: Ensures you keep delivering on your promise and sustain long-term success.
We keep our team of top talent small and close-knit. We’ve worked together for years, and our clients know them by name.
I’m deeply passionate about this work because I’ve seen firsthand how a great brand can change businesses, organizations, and lives. That’s what I mean when I say, ‘Branding Changes Everything.’ The best way to make that happen is to have a champion and change agent to guide you through this journey. That’s what I love most about my work and why I’ve created a different business model and service offering than what’s typically found in my industry.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’ve had the fortune to blend my experiences and expertise in Finance, Business Strategy, Brand Building, Storytelling, Creative, and Marketing into a comprehensive approach that helps our clients achieve transformative business results. My journey includes working with some of the best in the industry, from global giants like Procter & Gamble to innovative creative agencies like Interbrand, and through various startups and private equity ventures.
Our clients typically seek our expertise in five core areas:
1. Strategic Assessment: We analyze the brand, competition, market landscape, and conduct a SWOT analysis to identify opportunities and strategies for success.
2. Accelerated Branding Workshop: This intensive, one-day session aligns teams and kickstarts the branding process, making it both productive and fun.
3. Brand Strategy: We build a robust foundation for your brand and define your customer targets.
4. Executive Branding: Crafting personal brands for executives to elevate their professional presence.
I am immensely proud of our team and the remarkable work they produce. To highlight their excellence, I’ll share a testimonial from Jerry and Kelley Lujan of ELEVATION180: “Mike pulled together a team of absolute superstars. Each one of them is so gifted and talented at their craft. Their passion and expertise made us look forward to each time we worked with them. I hope to work with each one of them again in the future as we continue to grow and build on the foundation they helped us build.”

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
The lesson I’d like to share from this many years of business is that every challenge or what seem like a failure has led to a positive change in my journey. I think resilience comes from holding on to your goal and being open to what that supposed negative brings. I nearly died of a fatal illness right when my career in Finance was advancing rapidly, but as a result I reevaluated what I really wanted and joined Brand Management at P&G. Another time, I hit major wall and had to get sober. That path led me to working at agencies. Because of these two “failures” my life and business became so much rewarding and satisfying.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The biggest lesson I had to unlearn was how to transition from employee to entrepreneur and owner. I only did this about 20 years into my career. I was so used to the structure and process set by others. I learned to take more risks, to collaborate in new and different ways, and to let my customers guide me versus management. Because of this, my team and I were able to come up with many more innovative and helpful ways to improve the businesses and lives of our clients. I love that I got to learn this different way.
