Mike, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
My Co-Founder, Beau Schmitt, and I know what it feels like to deal with crippling anxiety.
After stressful weeks at work, followed by fun-filled weekends that definitely aren’t long enough, we were continually left feeling apprehensive and in our own heads on Sundays. Like, oh shit!, Monday is here again.
Those questions that pop into your head on Sundays haunted us. Like, am I on the right path in life? Am I as successful as I should be given my age? Am I worthy of finding my true love?
At first, we felt like we were alone in dealing with this internal darkness. But after launching our brand, Sunday Scaries, we realized that we weren’t just selling CBD stress relief products, but instead building an inclusive community of individuals who deal with anxiety too. This is what drives us to continually pursuing success, to remind our squad that they aren’t alone and that we are here to help – with laughter, with CBD and any other way we can.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Mike Sill. I’m from LA but have lived in San Diego since 2005.
I’m a serial entrepreneur, starting with a photography business and then graduating to owning a bar & grill and eventually ditching hospitality for the CBD industry.
Owning the bar was tough as hell. Low profit margins, mixed with employees who steal, mixed with constant fires that need to be put out. And not to mention, it was stressful af.
My business partner, Beau Schmitt, and I felt shackled to our business. We were working double digit hours, 6 days a week. It wasn’t sustainable and we eventually burned out.
This was when we discovered CBD. We took it and felt the immediate calm, cool and collected feeling it provides. We realized that was how we wanted to feel, so we pivoted from the bar life and moved to cannabis.
We are a CBD company that focuses on stress relief products. We’ve spent $100’s of thousands of dollars on R&D, sourcing the best raw materials and ensuring our products are custom formulated from the best manufacturers. This process was stressful it itself, knowing we were selling safe products (that actually work) gave us relief and drive. We have CBD gummies, CBD oil, CBD sleep oil with added vitamin blends for your everyday stress needs.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Word of mouth.
We have a post-purchase survey on our website, SundayScaries.com , that shows how customers first heard of us. Every week we check the metrics and “Friends & Family” is the #1 option chosen each week.
This tells me a lot as a business owner. Most notably that our products are the best marketing tool we have and they really work and are helping our customers to the point that they refer us.
We use this system paired with verified Yotpo reviews paired with earned media placements in high end publications to build reputation.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Every move we make in the CBD industry creates the need for resilience. Every path we take and every corner we turn is filled with friction. For example:
– Banks & Payment processors won’t allow us.
– Marketing channels like Facebook, Google and Snapchat won’t allow us.
– Retail channels won’t allow us.
– Manufacturers won’t take us on because they don’t want to jeopardize their core competency with a gray area product.
The list goes on and on and it can get extremely frustrating. Let’s just say we take a lot of CBD ourselves to deal with the stress.
