We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mike Rollerson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mike below.
Mike, appreciate you joining us today. Alright – so having the idea is one thing, but going from idea to execution is where countless people drop the ball. Can you talk to us about your journey from idea to execution?
Growing up, I’ve always loved looking at photography and the behind-the-scenes processes behind it; Taking an idea, bringing the different pieces of it together (location, model or product, lighting, composition, focus and post-processing) and building that final photo that you want to present.
When I first got into it, my goal wasn’t to find the easiest way to the end result, but to experiment with all of the different ways to get there, using each as a learning experience of what worked, what didn’t work and how I can take that knowledge to trying new ideas to not be stuck in a “cookie cutter” mold.
After doing photography for years as a hobby, I wanted a new challenge. I opened myself up for business and began working with individuals and businesses locally and internationally. My goal was always to create a photo that myself and the client would be proud of. Whether it’s a headshot for a portfolio, a photo for a billboard or a feature in a magazine.. I always put everything into making sure it was the best that I could do.
I love the art-side of photography more than the business side, so I don’t do much with advertising – I prefer to work with businesses or individuals who see something in my style as a way to add to or showcase them. This has been great as it allows me to continue with what I love doing, but to do it as a profession.
Without the love for photography and the long learning experiences over the years, I wouldn’t have been able to get to where I am today.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started with photography about 25 years ago. I was attending an event, didn’t have a camera of my own and seeing all of the excitement with lights and stage performances inspired me to jump into it. I picked up half a dozen disposable film cameras and went through all of them the first day! I was hooked from that moment and knew I wanted to do more. I bought a digital camera right after and learned all that I could with it – Wanting to take it more seriously, I moved to a DSLR which would allow me to upgrade different parts of the camera each year rather than replacing it. Over the year I added wireless flashes, lightstands and a variety of lenses to bring more to on-location photoshoots at different events like Comic Con. It was always a tricky process, carrying around bags of lights and other equipment, but it let me get some unique photos that were more than a “snapshot” – it let me build a scene, light it and shoot a finished product that I still love to look back on!
Over the years, I’ve continued to expand, adding a studio space, smoke and lighting effects and creative lenses that add to my style and allow me to get some fun and unique shots for clients.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal has always been to have fun and create unique and enjoyable photos that everyone can enjoy. I didn’t get into photography for the fame or the money, it was something I always loved to do, and still is! I love being able to take an idea from the beginning planning stages, create a concept and turn it into a reality!
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source for new clients has been existing clients. I always try to create a fun, enjoyable experience when working on a project and make sure that I’m delivering the best results that I can – something that a client is happy to display and promote, and I am too. Through word of mouth and showcasing these results, it’s brought on many new clients that are able to see my work and invite me to work with them!
