We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mike Partanna a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Mike, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Quality control is a challenge almost every entrepreneur has had to focus on when growing – any advice, stories or insight around how to best ensure quality is maintained as your business scales?
Quality is something that we take very seriously at Uncharted Tiny Homes. We believe that quality and growing a business goes hand-in-hand and it’s what sets us apart from some of our competitors. Maintaining that strong quality we’ve always had while also scaling our business has proven to be somewhat challenging. This may seem obvious but having the right team seems to be the key to keeping quality impeccable while also growing in a steady manner. Of course, we don’t have the expectation that anyone on our team is perfect, so accountability, fixing mistakes, and learning from them is also paramount. We consider ourselves very lucky to have a growing team who believes that quality is a pinnacle of success and is driven from start to finish across all areas – building, marketing, client communication, etc.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Uncharted Tiny Homes was thought up while watching a tiny home show on TV. I knew that I could build them and potentially do it even better. At the time, I was remodeling single family homes and dealing with a lot of clients who were unhappy with previous contractors which got to be pretty draining. I was losing the love for the work that I set out to do – create beautiful spaces for people. So, I knew it was time to switch it up! My wife and I rented part of a cheer gym and got to work designing and building our first model, The Mansion. We debuted the tiny home at a home expo a few months later. It was at that time that we knew we were on to something; there were lines wrapped around the venue full of people waiting to tour The Mansion and learn more about tiny homes. From there, we made it official and rented an actual warehouse space so we could welcome clients ready to take the plunge into tiny living. Over the past almost 7 years, we’ve designed 10 different models, some with lofted bedrooms and others with downstairs bedrooms. We’ve been consistently improving our process, the way we build, and the products we use. We make the design process easy for our clients, walking them through it from start to finish while having their budget in mind and being transparent with them about what ideas will and won’t work. While most of our clients choose one of our models to build, we can also build a completely custom tiny home if that’s what they prefer. Other than our build quality, I think something that sets us apart from our competitors is the fact that you won’t get a sales-pitch with us. We answer questions and point out different ways to upgrade the tiny home in design meetings, but at the end of the day, we aren’t here to make our potential clients feel pressured. Our goal is to work with our clients to design and build a space that they will be proud of and most importantly, will feel like home.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Thinking back to some of the expos we have done, the main thing that we hear from people is “Wow, that’s the most beautiful and well built tiny home I’ve ever seen!” We really pride ourselves on our quality and design aesthetic. Coming from a building background, I know how important it is to not only build a home that is beautiful but also that will last a lifetime. Designing floor plans that are functional and easy to live in is one of the most important things we do and something that doesn’t go unnoticed with potential clients. Keeping those things in mind when we are building and designing homes for people has made all the difference with our reputation.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
A big part of our business is building and managing relationships. We are very welcoming from the first time a potential client walks through our door for a tour to far after their build is completed. When someone decides they want to build a tiny home with us, they are welcome to stop by and check out the progress. We’re very reachable and answer questions even past the end of the build. There have been times when things have come up with out of state clients that I’ve had to fly out to take care of so that I know it’s done correctly. It’s doing those seemingly small things that mean a lot to people and, in the end, will allow them spread the word about the positive experience they had with us.
