We recently connected with Mike One and have shared our conversation below.

Mike, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?

The art of sampling drew me into the world of beat making. I practiced with my drum machine daily crafting what would become my sound. The drive for it was essentially followed with learning.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

My musical journey started in my adolescence where I had a deep curiosity for music and it’s production. Being my dad was a DJ, the love for music was in my DNA. I make beats and I grew up in an era where hip hop had “super producers”. These producers heavily influenced me in many different ways but most importantly, they had a signature style in their production that was unique to them. I feel I’ve developed my own signature sound to my beats which came from a combination of having an ear for sampling and using classic equipment as my production tools. As an artist I know the evolution of one’s creativity never ceases to expand and I’m grateful at the growth that has taken place. I went from making beats to also being able to play them live, essentially creating the beat live in that moment all triggered by my fingers at the right moments. This is a new frontier and I’m working on expanding my live performances to best encapsulate everything I have to offer as a creative.

The desire to share the art, fuse or inspire in some way for others.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.

I think everyone is challenged with resilience one way or another. I’m sure my experiences aren’t unique or unheard of but being resilient is a must. It’s easy to be doubtful or lose confidence when things don’t go your way. You must not lose sight of why you started and try and use that negativity as fuel to push you further. We are all challenged in our own unique ways to keep us growing in our craft.
