We recently connected with Mike O’Hara and have shared our conversation below.
Mike, appreciate you joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I’m a self-taught photographer who started out with my parents’ film camera, capturing everyday moments. In high school, I took a photography class that taught me the basics, and later, I built on that foundation through college studies focused on film and television production. Over the years, while working in film and TV, I’ve continued to grow my photography skills, refining my craft in landscape photography through online courses, books, and plenty of hands-on experience.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a photographer and producer specializing in outdoor content. Over the past decade, I’ve worked on a variety of television documentaries while running a photography business that focuses on landscape, adventure, and outdoor lifestyle photography. My work focuses on creating stunning visuals inspired by the beauty of wild landscapes, designed to captivate and deeply engage audiences. Beyond that, my goal is to spark curiosity about the natural world, inspiring others to explore, preserve, and cherish the incredible landscapes that surround us.
With my expertise in landscape photography, I collaborate with clients to capture adventurous moments in some of the world’s most breathtaking wild landscapes—whether for social media, print, or commercial projects. My experience traveling through remote backcountry areas and working with adventure products allows me to connect with clients on a deeper level, ensuring their stories and brands align with the spirit of exploration and nature.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
To me, photography is about bringing a vision to life—turning a simple thought into something tangible. My mind is always racing with ideas. I could be on a hike, spot a downhill mountain bike trail, and immediately imagine a rider cornering the turn with the early morning light streaming through the trees. The possibilities are endless, and that’s what keeps me inspired.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Cold emailing and staying active on social media are key ways to show brands what I’m capable of. Sharing my work consistently not only builds credibility but also opens the door for potential collaborations by showcasing my skills and vision in real-time.
