We were lucky to catch up with Mike Kelleher recently and have shared our conversation below.

Mike, appreciate you joining us today. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.

I never set out to open my own practice. Was never even in my vocabulary, but it had to be done. I always felt that patient care and treatment could be done differently. Involving the patient in the plan, allowing them to feel comfortable and being completely open and honest with them. I knew nothing about opening a business, and I am still learning. I just knew it had to be done, so I did it. I had to go into this with a certain amount of ignorance, because if I knew then what I know now, I might have been scared off. But, when I made up my mind to move forward, it had to work, failure was not an option and it still isn’t. And thankfully we have been very fortunate and extremely successful .

If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?

I did not choose this profession.. it chose me . I was lucky enough to have the best mentors and it would never happen again. it happened..the universe works in mysterious ways

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?

Passion. You have to have the passion to want to do this and be the best at it. People know if you are just going through the motions, and in turn, patients can feel your passion and it emboldens and excites everyone involved.
