We were lucky to catch up with Mike Kelleher recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Mike thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
I never set out to become an entrepreneur or establish my own business. This happened out of necessity and circumstance. I felt that there really wasn’t a setting or practice that I felt truly comfortable in, or that completely fit me. After years of learning, training, and experience decided that the only remaining option was to set out on my own. I had a vision, and I followed that vision. That being said, I could not have done this without having the experiences that I had, good, bad, or indifferent. I appreciate every one of them for exactly what they were, or were not.
The challenges of opening a business were, and are great. For better or for worse, I was somewhat oblivious of what it was actually going to take to make this business happen. Looking back, it was probably for the better. Who did I think I was to open a business, alone? I really did not know what it was going to take, but that really didn’t matter. I knew what I wanted to do, and I did it. There was no other option. I was going to do this and it was going to work. End of story, and fortunately it has done very well so far.
My advice? Don’t do it. Kidding..Prepare yourself so when the time comes you have all of the tools to make your dream happen. I do everything at my office..order supplies, schedule patients, treat patients, advertising, web design, clean the toilets..you name it..but I was prepared to do all this and unbeknownst to me, had been preparing for this moment all of my life.
Mike, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a 2005 graduate of the prestigious Emory University Physician Assistant program and have been practicing medicine since that time. Cosmetic Injectables/Medicine has been my passion for the past decade, and I have completely devoted myself to this medical subspecialty over this time. I never set out to, nor did I ever consider Cosmetic medicine, it just happened. Like all great things in life, it chose me, I did not necessarily choose this. The universe works in mysterious ways. I was working in a Dermatology practice and we had a need to provide Botox/dermal filler and I decided, who can take care of our patients better than us? I thought , I’ll give this a try, if I am any good at it and like it, then I will pursue this, if not I won’t…and here we are 10 or so years later.
Over this time I have worked with multiple national Medspas, developing training and consulting for them, worked with some of the largest cosmetic training programs in the country and train and consult with the largest Cosmetic company in the world. I see patients full time in clinic for nonsurgical procedures and have been lucky enough to offer my insight on in-person panels, conferences and wonderful publications like Canvas Rebel.
Initially I truly never thought about a brand, per se. I thought about what I wanted to see and what I offer, which is different than any other practice I ever had come across, as it should be. I created (R)Evolution with the following principles in mind..Providing topnotch care, superior, natural, individualized results. I wanted a place where everyone would feel comfortable, its unassuming, low key, a little edgy..it is an extension of me.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
The most helpful thing is not being afraid to try, fail..accept and learn from this failure, readjust and move forward.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Word of mouth. If you treat people right, like you want to be treated. If you are passionate and sincere in what you do, this automatically permeates and is felt in everything you do. People see this, can feel this and appreciate this and will gravitate to that.
