We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mike & Kassie Cervone. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mike & Kassie below.
Mike & Kassie, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I think the thing that makes what we do unique is that we get to be a part of so many special occasions. We have created pieces for baby showers, weddings, birthday parties, and everything in between. We have had the honor of knowing baby names before anyone else, creating special pieces for retirements/births/graduations, and being involved in the decor for all kinds of parties and events. Most recently we were privileged to make a tray for a family to celebrate their son who was planning to propose to his girlfriend. It had both of their names and a meaningful quote. It’s one of those special memories that we won’t ever forget.
Mike & Kassie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Our hobby turned into a business when the world was shut down in 2020. We found ourselves with a lot of time on our hands and not a whole lot to do. Mike has always been extremely talented when it comes to anything artistic and the running joke in our family has always been, “don’t buy that…Mike can make it”. Mike had a background in all things art from painting to tattoo work, so we started kind of just playing around with some old furniture we had to pass the time. We burnt, by hand, a sunflower in the top of an old table and shared it on social media. The business kind of took off from there, with many people reaching out asking about custom designs and ideas. We decided to continue creating and One Fine Sign has grown from there. Our woodburnt earrings have been very popular, as well as trays, charcuterie boards, and other custom woodburnt pieces. We have tried our hand at many things over the past few years though…and we would never turn down a project! We have built wine boxes, made name cutouts, and even essential oil air fresheners!
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Our number one goal is to provide a great life for our daughter. She’s about to turn 2, and we have always looked at One Fine Sign as her “college fund”. We hope she will want to get involved in the business in creative ways as she gets older, but even if she doesn’t, we hope it provides an extra source of income to help provide for her on whatever journey she chooses. I think at the end of the day most small businesses want the same thing- to make an income doing what they love. That’s all we want as well. We also love being able to involve our customers in the creative process and help see their vision come to life.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
We don’t think people understand how much work and planning goes into each piece we make. It’s always a little disheartening when someone reaches out about a really cool project and then never follows through because of price or wait time. It takes anywhere from weeks to even months sometimes to really perfect a project. We spend hours upon hours designing, building, and finishing each piece…on top of both of our full time jobs outside of the home. We would never send something out the door unless it was up to our high standards, and I think some people tend to underestimate the amount of time it takes to create these projects by hand start to finish. In the days of internet shopping it is so easy to get something delivered next day and we think that has given some people unrealistic expectations about handmade art.
