We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mike Guevara. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mike below.
Alright, Mike thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
While training high school athletes in LA, I worked with a diverse range of clients, focusing on fitness. One day, Victoria Azarenka approached me for assistance after a session with a talented high school tennis player. This marked the turning point in my career. After training with me, she went on to win numerous Opens, solidifying both her success and my reputation as a top trainer
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My overall purpose is to serve. At heart, I am a fitness coach specializing in professional basketball players, though I can coach athletes in any sport, with a primary focus on basketball. I started as a football player in high school and college and eventually transitioned to training tennis players before finding my niche in basketball.
Outside of fitness training, I also run an app called the GBG Hoops app, designed to help basketball players improve their fitness. In college, I focused on fitness studies, specifically kinesiology, and began training athletes after graduating with my undergraduate degree.
Within the fitness industry, I am passionate about injury prevention and understanding how injuries occur. My goal is not only to help players improve athletically but also to keep them safe, enabling them to play as much as possible while feeling their best.
I started training in a gym, moved to personal training, and eventually began working with professional athletes. If I could offer any advice to younger individuals, it would be to always strive for improvement, be a good human, remain a student, network as much as possible, and always be true to yourself.
Have you ever had to pivot?
The biggest shift in my career came when I began training professional athletes. At the time, I was training top high schoolers and was unknowingly being watched by a pro named Victoria Azarenka. After a training session, she approached me and asked if I could travel the world with her as her trainer.
It was a huge commitment and a significant risk, and I was scared of not performing well. I sought advice from my mentor, who encouraged me to take the opportunity, so I did. Looking back, that decision was probably the most life-changing moment for me.
During that journey, I met many influential people and had experiences that profoundly impacted my life. Not only was it transformative personally, but it also catapulted my career and eventually led me to specialize in training basketball players.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
My situation is unique because my business partner is my wife. Before I met her, I wasn’t posting much content, but she elevated it to the next level. With her extensive background working with major players in the music industry, she knew exactly what to do with my material.
We met at a wedding through mutual friends, and things took off from there. She significantly enhanced my YouTube channel and deepened my understanding of content creation. Now, she is the heartbeat behind my marketing and design for the app and all of my content.
