Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mike Ecker. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Mike, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you come up with the idea for your business?

Ever since I started taking Graphic Design courses I was always intrigued about going out on my own. I eventually developed an interest to paint murals too. There aren’t many full-time jobs painting murals so I leveraged my skills in design and the drive to paint murals to start my own business.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

Ecker Design Company is a full-service graphic design creative studio that specializes in branding, logo design, murals, and illustration.

I help my clients build trust and effectively speak to their target audience with personalized logo design and branding. I believe what my clients do is special. They work endlessly on their businesses and they should have a brand that they are proud to represent. Hand-crafted logo design embraces a brand’s personality, makes it more approachable, and cuts through the digital noise to make it stand out from the pack.

Doing a lot of hand-drawn work led me to paint murals. A mural is a great way to reach new customers through in-person experiences and social media. Creating an inviting space people want to visit is a huge way to get new customers to your business. Using my iPad, I use photos from my site visit to “draw” directly on the wall. Using this approach allows me to be the most creative by dodging the limitations of the computer.

We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.

I have always enjoyed making things with my hands. While working as an Art Director in New York City, I rekindled my passion for design when I started introducing hand-drawn elements into my work.

I spent time outside of my 9-5 job studying and practicing lettering, illustration, and logo design techniques. Reinventing my style of design allowed me to branch out on my own and start Ecker Design Company in 2016.

I strongly recommend overlapping your current job with starting your new business. Having a consistent source of income allows you not put so much pressure on your new business to support you. This method allows you take only take on projects that will benefit your business.

How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?

After I project is completed, I make sure to check in about a month later to see how the project has improved their day-to-day since working with me. I also make it a point to follow up a year after the project to check in again as their goals could have changed and I can help assist them reach these.
