We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mike Carter. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mike below.
Hi Mike, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on is where I’m working currently at NEWM.io. We are empowering artist to be able to take more control over their career and their intellectual property by fractionalizing streaming rights and selling ownership. The back story: I have been in the blockchain industry since 2020 mostly as an investor but I was curious as to how this technology was going to apply to the music industry. So I took the time to learn about it so that I may get involved. The blockchain I was most interested in was Cardano. In November 2021 cardano had a big event called the cardano summit where all of the projects being built on that blockchain were introducing themselves to the world.
That where I found out about NEWM.io and what they planned to do to change the music industry. I was very interested in them from day 1. I reached out to the CEO and let him know how passionate I am to improve the music industry as well and he gave me an opportunity to prove myself.
I took that opportunity and ran with it. So much so that the company hired my business partner and I to help them out. We brung them their first record release (Which was a HUGE success go to Murs.NEWM.io) and the company gave us our own team to build upon to further success of other artist we bring to the table. So now I am apart of the Artist Relations team at NEWM.io and its my dream job.
Our most recent accomplishment was that we sold 100% of the streaming ip rights to our song “Lost in my Own Zone” (here is the link https://open.spotify.com/album/5HNfh8xo85KZSh9MdIzgyy?si=FBJrqdD5TzC3eGJy3BOikQ&nd=1 ) In less that 36 hours! We made history!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m an artist known as Mikey Mo the MC. I been in the game since 2005 making music and after the pandemic I realized how my career needed to change direction to be able to keep up with the environment. I’ve released a lot of music throughout my career but I never reached any huge status. But I did manage to gain respect from my peers. I happen to have a very dope network of people i’ve worked with, worked for, or some other form of collaboration. Now that I’m older and in more of a leadership position I have began to transition my career to be able to help other artist. I still make music just not as often as I did before.
Now I focus on helping other artist transition their art to web3 and educate them as to how it’s beneficial for their careers. Many artist aren’t aware about how to collect revenue from their IP rights and this is where I help the most. I help artist get they money they deserve from their art and I bring awareness to them as to what avenues of revenue they may be missing. It feels very gratifying to help other artist advance their careers. You can check out NEWM.io to see what we do.
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
I think NFT’s are an absolute game changer if used properly. A way that we use NFT’s at NEWM.io is we fractionalize the streaming IP rights of artist music. This allows artist to still put their music on all the web2 streaming platforms (Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, etc..) but now they can sell the rights to supports and the supporters receive the royalties according tot he percentage they own. Being able to handle business with smart contracts is a lot more secure and eliminates the need for so many middlemen. NFT’s puts the power back into the artists hands. NFT’s also have tremendous use case for many other industries. I’m excited to see what changes they bring.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
The best thing society can do to support artist is to:
1. Listen to the artists music as often as possible on streaming platforms.
2. Share the artist music all over social media.
3. Give artist honest feedback to help them grow.
4. Purchase whatever the artist is selling.
5. Join the communities of artist you love. help them grow.
6. Give artist more of a chance by valuing their music and don’t look at music as a loss leader.
These six steps will help artist create more authentic music instead of mimicking whats popular.
