Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mike Campbell. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Mike, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on to date, amongst the many I have worked on is the one that I am currently starring in as Lava in the musical stage play Not Here. Directed and written by the incredible Doug Kaback, Anthony Valadez and Jeff Izzo. Lava, in their 20’s is a non binary, African American poet and educator. Lava is an avid reader and political activist who is the glue that holds everyone and everything together. I am not non binary by any means however, as actors other than telling the story, embodying the character and finding the truth. It’s our jobs to step into others shoes. It’s a neurocognitive phenomenon. Not Here features diverse characters from divergent viewpoints that will cultivate a deeper analysis and critical response to the issues of todays world. All of which drew me to Lava and the play itself. Not Here is a proactive and innovative approach to exploring how we answer difficult societal issues.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I was born in Santa Monica, California. Growing up in LA, Hollywood is all around you. I lived on the same block and actors, producer and writers. I was always a performer in school, I’ve gone to school with their children so I was always immersed in it. I currently work at Warner Bros Studios learning and soaking it all up, whilst being an Actor. What I’m most proud of though I am a very disciplined individual is my commitment and consistency to all of which I make my art. What sets me apart is my ability to give a visual form to an idea. Other than my career what makes me most proud is that at the end of the day is not about what you’ve amassed or accomplished but who you’ve lifted up, who you’ve made better. What have you given back.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, through my art I have the ability to speak to millions of people. Whether it be on stage or screen. Through that vertical, I have the ability to change peoples minds and hearts for the better. When people come to see me, If you’ve ever left the theater of any kind better than when you arrived. I’ve done my job. Being able to put a mere smile on an audience members face is all the satisfaction I need. That’s the most rewarding aspect of being an actor.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Everything today is at our fingertips. What I’ll say about resources is not only to immerse and drown yourself in your art as a true artist. Surround yourself with those who are on the same mission as you. We are mere explorers of infinity in the pursuit of absolute perfection. Surround yourself with not only actors but producer, writers, choreographers etc. You never know what you can learn from each other and build together.
