We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mike and Christy Flynn a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Mike and Christy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
In 2017, Mike and I purchased our 23 acres and began our farm animal rescue. We were solely funded from our meager income. However, we worked hard and developed a connection in our community. We are blessed to be able to provide for around 90 animals.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Mike was a sheriff’s deputy and saw a need for a safe place to take “found” and surrendered farm animals. Mike got injured in Iraq, he became a disabled veteran and we began the rescue as a way for him to feel like he had a purpose.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
The Gentle Barn was part of the inspiration for our farm animal rescue. The founder showed resilience and overcame so much to ensure that animals were rescued. Like Laks, we also provide for our animals to the best of our ability. We also help people in our community when we can. It’s all about kindness!

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Mike and I are busy on social media. We help people. We are always delivering pet food, giving advice and networking to help people. We’ve been so blessed to have networked with so many rescues all across our state.

This is Willa. We are often times seen as a pig rescue because pigs are our most common intake.
