We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mikaylia Dudley. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mikaylia below.
Mikaylia, appreciate you joining us today. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
My first client was Kierra Polidore. I believe I met her in 2013.. I was commissioned in July of 2020, but I did not know where to start because I never ran a business before. I started posting, telling everyone I was a Notary Public, and sent my business cards to my friends. She messaged me one day and asked if I could notarize a document for her. This moment will always be special because it is one thing to have strangers support your business, but there an entire sense of confidence that you gain when people who call you their friend believe in you.

Mikaylia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name in Mikaylia A. Dudley (commissioned as Mikaylia Washington). I am a 29 year old, first year law student in Nashville, TN. I provide mobile notary services to Davidson County and the surrounding counties in Middle TN. Surprisingly, I did not get into the business, I was thrown in. Moments with Mikaylia was my originally the name of my podcast, but once I began working and recovering from divorce, I did not have time to keep up with it. I was taking clients, but because I was working for a law firm when I got commissioned in 2020, I didn’t put my all into it. I just did it when I had time. I went on Christmas break from my job and told my boss that I would see her in January. Two days later, the Christmas bombing in Nashville occurred and I ended up being furloughed because our office building was destroyed. Life still went on. I still had bills due. Therefore, I had no other choice to go full time….and I officially went into business.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients is marketing. This is not a business where you can just speak about it once and be done. You have to have a social media presence. You have to post every day. You have to work ten times as hard to make yourself visible. I post the business’s contact information every day to two days on the business social media platforms and post on my personal social media as well. The clientele and money is out there in the world, you just have to make it easy for people to find you.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
What helps build reputation in the market is DOING GOOD BUSINESS. That means keeping confidentiality and remaining professional at all times. I treat people with fairness. I make sure they understand what they are signing. I talk to them and ask how their day is going. I value their time and money because they are investing into me.
