Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mikayla Prioleau . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Mikayla, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My mom is my rock. She always pushed me to my maximum potential and made it clear that she has my best interest. She allowed me to experience different things in my childhood that would help me understand the ways of this world at a young age. She taught me the importance of loving God and staying true to my faith. This has impacted my life in so many ways. Her footsteps and guidance have shaped me into the woman I am today and have helped me build a strong life and career for myself. At the age of 22 I was working in corporate America for a multinational sports entertainment company as a Marketing Manager. I was the only African American on my team and was able to adapt and obtain success just like everyone else. During that time, I began to learn the importance of networking and building relationships with strangers who could have a positive impact on your future.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
A lot of people know that I started my food blog because I was battling depression of losing my grandmother. At the time, I needed an outlet and cooking is always a form of therapy to me. I can really put myself into the dishes that I create and that is exactly what my grandma did with every meal that she made for my family and I. I would love to visit her house as a kid because I knew a good meal or two was coming with it! But the overall reason I started my food page is because I wanted to extend the brand that I have already created. We are all our own brands and it’s important that we show off our brand. When you put your mind, body, soul and all into something, the results of success will show. The key is patience and taking time to understand the timing of things. My mom always said, “What’s for you, is for you”. I am a strong believer of that and I want to be an inspiration to others to protect your craft. I didn’t start posting restaurants until after 2 months of an active food blog because I wanted to gain the engagement with the meals I prepared first. I wanted people to see my heart and creativity that I put into the meals I prepared. I want my followers to know that I am fun, I am strong, and I am determined.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Consistency. I believe that consistency helped me build my reputation within my market. You have to put yourself out there because you are your own brand. Meet people, talk to strangers, tell people your goals, attend events, engage on other peoples content, and be the best version of yourself!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative would be connecting with and meeting new people. I love when people are able to acknowledge my growth and success from following the start of my journey. I have met so many other creators, bloggers, influencers, vloggers etc. The crazy thing is that we all share some of the similar struggles and experiences and we find out, just by simply communicating. I have built a network and a village of people who help me build a sense of community.
