We recently connected with Mikayla Major and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Mikayla , thanks for joining us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
Growing up wasn’t always the easiest. My biological father wasn’t involved in my life so my mom took on both roles. Although that part was missing, I would say God always provided that fatherly mentor/ role model whether it be a teacher, youth pastor, my current step father, and father in law. My humble mother wouldnt take the credit but she definitely taught me right by being consistant in telling and showing what Love meant. She would always tell me to be slow to anger, slow to fight, slow to judge but quick to Love your neighbor. Just Love.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I first knew I wanted to be an artist from the time I was a little girl. My mom would tell me that in the mornings, while getting ready for school I would hum random soft melodies. My first stage presence was when I was about 7 years old at a Pentecostal church. I got to lead the children’s and adult choir singing “This little light of mine.” I will never forget the butterflies but sense of feeling at home while on stage. Fast forward to being in the high school choir with my best friends and taking it serious after graduation; getting married, becoming a mom to 3. I started my journey as a worship leader. From starting at a smaller church and working my way up to a mega I learned the importance of worship, keeping posture, spirituality. This opened a door for me to sing backgrounds for gospel artist like Bishop Vaugh Cortez, local artist, tour with the amazing Maverick City and etc. Also being able to be shown the ropes and get alittle songwriters experience with artist under my God mom/mentor songwriter, Ericka Watson. I was empowered to write my own music, sharing my thoughts. Which makes me super excited to announce my single coming out in November called California Girl with and EP in the works to follow after. It is country Christian based. I chose this genre because I’m a country girl that loves Jesus. I wrote this song around a time I felt like a change was coming. That change terrified me and anyone that knows me knows that I am comfortable with the normal. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Change can mean good. Change can mean bigger and better. Everyone has different ways to express and feel. I have found that in writing and sharing in song. I want my followers and fans to feel like they have entered a safe and relatable space while crossing my page. You’ll get to see my family, life, my countryside, my goofy side, my spiritual side. and hear good music, and if you need it, I’ll write some good music for you. Let’s grow together.
I am most proud of my dedication. No one really talks about the trails, loneliness, let downs, mistakes and time that comes with stepping out and pursuing in your dreams. It can feel weighty, but I have made up my mind that I am not giving up till I make it.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part for me would be the relationships built with my followers and audience. Being able to hear the stories of encouragement and confidence felt after coming across my page is the better than anything.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
When just getting started, I got wrapped up under a fraudulent management that took my kindness, lack of knowing the industry fully, and money. They sold me a dream that they didn’t even have access to themselves. Once things started getting serious and knowing my focus, quitting randomly while taking thousands from me without results was their decision. In this moment, I was hurt, discouraged, and hit off guard. With all that happened, I had to learn and sucked it up. I began to build from scratch, learn/ask questions for myself, promote, network with successful people, and grow consistently. This led me to the reconstruction of my song which sounds 100 percent better while in the hands of an amazing producer Omito Beats, a brilliant engineer Stilz with the White Gloves Productions, and the one and only videographer John Call. Everything we go through is a learning experience. It’s apart of any journey. I am grateful at the end of the day for what led me to today. One door may close for the many to open.
