We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mikayla Fleming. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mikayla below.
Alright, Mikayla thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
From a young age, my passion for music was evident. One defining moment was when I received my first Nintendo DSI and began experimenting by recording vocals and sounds. This simple activity opened up a world of possibilities, fueling my curiosity and passion for creating music. Growing up, I developed a robust, musically inclined childhood, learning to play various instruments, including woodwinds and strings.
My involvement in school choir, where I performed as both a lead and backup vocalist, allowed me to explore different aspects of music and performance, further solidifying my desire to pursue this path. High school and college provided me with opportunities to enhance my musical skills through formal education and practical experiences. I took various sound courses, including songwriting at Grand Canyon University, which provided me with a strong foundation in music production and knowledge of keys and other musical elements.
As I grew older, my passion for music only intensified. I started making mixtapes and experimenting with digital audio workstations, constantly seeking new ways to express myself creatively. Over the years, I’ve honed my skills and developed a unique soundscape as a DJ, vocalist, and producer. Performing at numerous venues and events in Portland, Salem, and Bend has allowed me to refine my craft and gain extensive experience in the music industry.
Ultimately, it was this combination of early experiences with different instruments, vocal training, formal education, and my unwavering passion that guided me toward a professional creative path. As “IN THE WORKS,” I strive to push creative boundaries across multiple genres, blending my passion for electronic music with a keen sense of sound design and live performance. These moments not only shaped my skills but also instilled in me a deep love for music and an unwavering drive to push creative boundaries.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
In your view, what can society do to best support artists, creatives, and a thriving creative ecosystem?
One of the simplest yet most impactful ways to support artists and creatives is through social media engagement. Actions like liking, sharing, and commenting on their work cost nothing but mean everything to a creative person. It helps increase visibility, reach a wider audience, and show genuine appreciation for their craft.
Instead of perpetuating the stereotype of “starving artists” or looking down on creatives, it’s essential to recognize the grit and passion driving them. Many artists have faced significant personal losses, which fuel their dedication to their work. By valuing and promoting their efforts, society can help build a supportive ecosystem where creativity thrives.
Society can support artists and creatives by fostering environments that encourage exploration and expression. Providing access to affordable education and resources such as workshops, classes, courses, residencies, and grants can significantly empower creatives. It’s crucial to promote diverse representation and ensure that platforms for exposure are available to artists from all backgrounds.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
One aspect that non-creatives may struggle to understand is the deep emotional investment and vulnerability involved in a creative journey. For many artists, creativity is not just a career but a fundamental part of their identity. This means that success and failure in their craft can profoundly impact their sense of self-worth and purpose. Additionally, the constant need for innovation and pushing boundaries requires a balance of resilience and receptivity to new ideas, which can be both exhilarating and exhausting.
Understanding and supporting these emotional facets can make a world of difference. A creative’s journey is often marked by moments of self-doubt and external validation, so encouragement and recognition from the community can play a significant role in their continued dedication to their craft.
It’s also essential to acknowledge that being a creative is a 24/7 commitment. Many people may not realize that the demands of their craft, including gigs, business deals, and continuous self-improvement, can lead to burnout. As a result, creatives may find it challenging to meet usual commitments or expectations. Appreciating the relentless effort it takes to stay afloat and succeed in this field highlights the need for empathy and support from the broader community.
