We recently connected with Mikayla Cohen and have shared our conversation below.
Mikayla, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
During the beginning of the lockdown in 2020, I was sent home from my last semester of college. On top of the global pandemic, I was also going through life-altering changes in my personal life. So, not being able to graduate, see my friends, and of course the overall panic of the pandemic left me with a void in my heart that I knew I needed to fill. I had always loved working with kids and I noticed how confused/scared/lonely the pandemic made kids feel, especially in the beginning when no one knew what was really going on. I wanted to find a way to make them smile during this tough time, and that’s when the idea hit me. Thinking back to high school, I remembered that I had an old princess made by my grandma in my closet from when I did a couple of birthday parties for kids. I decided to dust off the old dress and video call family friends’ kids as their favorite princess to make them smile and add a “little light” to their day. Before I knew it, I was completely booked up with virtual parties, visits, and events with people all over the country! As the lockdown came to an end I began doing in-person parties for the first time and hired my first real performer. I realized how much I loved running a business along with performing and entertaining kids. So much so, that my little business began to grow and grow until we had a full cast of 10 people! I’ve also been able to work with local businesses and plan absolutely beautiful events, none of which I had ever done before Little Light. Little Light has shown me that with passion, love, dedication, hard work, and trust, you can do anything you set your mind to. Now, I am able to live my dream of performing in New York City while owning a magical business in my childhood home of South Florida!
Mikayla, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

About me! Mikayla Cohen:
My name is Mikayla Cohen and I’m from sunny South Florida. By the time I was 3, I knew I had a passion for music. I would sing with local children’s performance groups throughout the city with hits like “Part of Your World” from the Little Mermaid and “Beautiful” by Christina Aguilera. However, my passion for theatre began in elementary school with my first-ever role as Mrs. Zuckerman in “Charlotte’s Web.” The rest was history. I received a scholarship to attend American Heritage, a College Prep High School with a specialization in Performing Arts, graduated from Elon University with my BFA in Music Theatre, and have performed across the globe!
Aside from music theatre, I love collecting rocks, teaching jazzercise, painting, hiking, spending time with my friends and family, and songwriting. I have released an EP entitled “Same Stars” and continue to write music/produce my own music.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
The best advice I would have for managing a team and maintaining high morale would be communication. I have learned so much not only as a business owner but also as a performer about the importance of communication. Communication not only allows your teammates to build a connection and trust with you but it also fosters a sense of mutual respect. When communication stops or becomes less of a priority, I notice a change in my team immediately. It is your job as the boss to have consistent and open communication no matter how hard the conversation might be for you. As a person, confrontation is very difficult for me, so implementing tools to help you get through the discomfort is also helpful if you are someone like me!
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients for us personally would be referrals. Building client loyalty is super important in the party entertainment business. Once you provide someone with an unforgettable experience, it is unlike any Instagram ad, corporate event, or email blast! Your clients will refer you to their friends and then they will refer you to THEIR friends and the chain continues! Especially with something as personal as a special party or event, people are trusting you to be consistent, reliable, and of course magical. After you provide that experience for them, the rest is history!
