Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Miguel Rojas . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Miguel, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Being around creative friends sparked my initial interest in art. I never expected myself to pursue a career in the Arts. It was during college where I found being creative helped me relax and disassociate myself from the real world. At the time I spent most of my free time in the dark room developing film and prints. It was the perfect way of relaxing and seeing real results of a weeks worth of shooting film. I’ll always have a spot in my heart for that but it wasn’t until I picked up a paintbrush where I knew that’s what I wanted to do. Something about putting on headphones and getting messy with paint felt so right.
Miguel, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hello all, my name is Miguel Rojas but my friends call my Miggy. I’ve been called a renaissance man by many because I love doing way too many mediums of at. I love painting and mainly focus on that but I am also a photographer and sculptor. I have sold countless paintings, I’ve been in Vogue Italia multiple times and none of the chairs I’ve made have broken.. yet haha. I believe everyone has some sort of artistic qualities and hope to inspire others to find something they love doing in the arts, even if it’s just as a hobby.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I’ve had two big pivots, the first one introduced me to art. During first two years of college I was really depressed. Everyday felt like a drag but when I took my first art class I knew if found some sort of relief. I spent the last two years taking so many art classes and even started working for an art gallery. I learned so much during that time I couldn’t leave it out. The second pivot im actually living through right now. After graduating I started working for a company I wont name but it was a terrible experience.. I worked 13 hours during night shifts, couldn’t see my friends nor family. While working there I never had time to focus on my creative side and I felt like I was spiraling back down. One day I found myself on the job listing section of Glasstire and saw a job as an art assistant. Everything in the job description aligned with what I was looking for in a job. So I bit the bullet and went in for an interview…. I instantly got the job. Here I’ve learned so much more than I expected especially the business side of art. I know working for Peter is shaping me into a more disciplined artist. I think that night on my lunch break looking for a job pivoted my life, career and mental health for the better.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Aside from having a studio to continue my practice. I’d like to create a gallery that helps younger/ unseen artist in the Houston area. I think it’s very important to help and guide people that aren’t aware of how to go about things in the art world. Being a mentor and having a respected/ safe space for other artist to grow is one a goal I will accomplish.
