We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Miguel Monteagudo. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Miguel below.
Miguel, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Is difficult for me to point out just one project.
There are projects when ideas flow effortlessly in sync with the client’s vision. When we’re all on the same frequency, it feels like we’re unstoppable. Seeing that shared vision come to life is pretty awesome.
Also for an audiovisual artist like myself, one situation that can make a project meaningful is when the pressure’s on, and it’s all about collective creativity. Generally, these are the projects where the stakes are high, and success hinges on how well the team collaborates. It’s about weaving together talents and ideas, where every contribution counts, and when everything aligns, it’s not just a win for the project, but for the team’s synergy.
Moreover, there are projects where I thrive on creative liberty, fostering an environment where experimentation is not just encouraged but celebrated. This freedom grants me the opportunity to push boundaries, explore new techniques, and infuse my work with a unique essence. Each stroke of experimentation adds depth and richness to the creative process, leading to original creations that defy expectations in the best way possible. It’s in these projects where I find the greatest joy.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I was 24 when I embarked on my journey in the animation industry, establishing myself as the owner of an animation studio along with 3 other partners/creatives. Working from Caracas, Venezuela with notable clients such as Sony Entertainment, HBO, and AXN, I began honing my skills across various disciplines including graphic design, illustration, storyboarding, and mastering both 2D and 3D animation, motion graphics, VFX, and compositing.
After six years of studio ownership, I decided to transition into freelance work, seeking greater flexibility and variety in my projects. This period allowed me to refine my abilities through a diverse range of projects, each presenting unique challenges and opportunities for creative expression. Collaborating with a mixed array of clients deepened my understanding of the industry’s intricacies while enhancing my capacity to deliver more complex projects.
More recently I moved to Los Angeles, and after 10 years I’ve had the privilege of working with industry giants such as Activision and Microsoft, contributing to projects that have made significant impacts on the modern media landscape. Whether developing immersive gaming experiences or crafting visually compelling marketing campaigns, my tenure at these esteemed companies has further solidified my reputation as a versatile and accomplished motion graphics professional.
Throughout my career, my dedication has remained persistent, as I continuously push the boundaries of creativity and unique motion graphic style. From executing precise directives to orchestrating acclaimed campaigns, my career has been defined by a relentless pursuit of improvement and a passion for bringing visions to life through the transformative power of visual communications.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
My career in advertisement and marketing is about working in teams and solving problems. It’s a great feeling to work on projects from an abstract notion of an idea to the point where it communicates effectively and also looks badass.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
In my field resilience is everything, every new idea and every detail comes with a fair share of doubt and obstacles. “Everything in the frame has a meaning” which makes every decision a statement of resilience. When in the process of creation, a decision that holds in place has to be of sufficient importance to the overall idea that makes it essential. Otherwise, it will need to be replaced for the benefit of the concept and the project as a whole.
To me, this philosophy applies to every part of the creation in the audio-visual field.
