We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Miguel Manzo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Miguel, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I became interested in learning how the voice works because of my vocal challenges as a singer. I wanted to understand how the voice worked and why mine was having such a hard time. That’s how my path changed directions. I became obsessed with knowing everything I could about voice mechanics.
I realized that my voice wasn’t defective; I just didn’t know how to use it fully. I also realized that, like me, there were probably more people that I could help through my newly acquired knowledge and personal experience.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m known in most countries as the vocal wizard for my ability and speed to help them fix their vocal issues. I’ve been a certified vocal coach for almost 20 years. I’ve worked in singing competition shows as the main vocal technique teacher in different countries.
But my story didn’t start there. I wasn’t a born gifted singer. I had to learn through a lot of work, research, and patience what I now teach others.
Most people can learn to sing if they’re taught the right exercises for their type of voice.
I help singers get unstuck and open the door to their true potential. My clients range from recording artists to musical theater actors to complete beginners who want to start singing from scratch.
I am a personal trainer for the voice. I prescribe custom-made vocal routines that will help your voice work in different directions: range, power, ease, endurance, etc.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Some of the biggest insights I’ve had are that there’s more than one way to get where you want, that experience is more important than diplomas, and that practice cannot be replaced by knowledge.
Sometimes you idolize certain disciplines, paths, mentors, schools, methodologies… that you don’t give yourself permission to experiment with other things, even when you’re not getting the results you want. It’s hard to change one’s mind, but once we can be flexible and open to hearing other points of view, we can expand our potential for growth.
Question everything. If something works, stick to it, commit.
Be honest with yourself, most of all.
If you’re stuck, try something different.
Get a vocal coach or singing teacher. You will never get as far on your own.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
It took me at least 10 years of study to be able to fix old habits and develop the skill I have today. It was a hard road, sometimes lonely and frustrating, but I knew in my heart and mind that I could one day see the light at the other end.
Some people want to sing like their favorite singers (who have been singing for decades) but they don’t commit to training the voice (practice, voice lessons, vocal care…) and usually they give up when it gets hard.
Singing is like other disciplines. It will be easier for some people, but it doesn’t mean it’s not possible to achieve. It just requires repetition and time.
