We recently connected with Miguel Garcia and have shared our conversation below.
Miguel , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
It was 2018 and I had been working for Chase for 11 years. I was an assistant Branch Manager but always had a passion and love for cooking and bring joy to people through my cooking. Towards the end of 2018 I had a fall out with my new manager and decided to quit. Fast forward to January of 2019 and my brother-in-law (Alex Ramirez) approached me and asked if I had found another job- I said no. So he suggested we start Catering Tacos.
We split the cost of the taco cart and I purchased our first inventory and off we went. We had a meeting with our wives to share the idea and ask for their support. That day we also came up with the name. My wife, Sylvia, came up with our first logo on Canva, we made business cards and started our Instagram page and started to promote our business.
My good friend Conrad was our first client. He booked us for his wife Candy’s birthday. I remember that day it was raining and we got soaking wet. But we were happy. We had something that was ours and it didn’t matter what we had to do or go through because at the end of the day it was something we were building for us, not for someone else.
Miguel , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We got started back in 2019 as a catering company, My wife and I had a 9-5 and in 2018 I decided to leave to pursue my passion and leave that 9-5 my wife did the same a year later, it had always been my goal to start my own catering/restaurant business since I was young, as my dad has been in the industry for over 30 years, I grew up watching him cook my whole life and saw how passionate he was about it, that I started to get passionate about it as well and wanted to start learning more about the industry and how to cook our traditional family recipes, once I had taken that leap of faith back in 2018, we invested in a taco cart and since we had built a few relationships in our previous jobs we started letting everyone know the business we had started, family, friends, old co-workers, little by little the word started to spread and we started to work on our recipes, we did a few pop-ups in my parents backyard to get test our recipes to get them right, after a few pop ups we felt confident to start booking backyard events, fast forward 4 years later we are still doing those backyard events for all our loyal customers from day one and now have two locations one in Montebello and our newest location in Anaheim, What has set us apart from the others is that we offer top quality ingredients and meats for all of our locations, that is if you visit us in Montebello, order take out or delivery in Anaheim or book us for your next private event. What I would like our potential clients to know is that we take a lot of pride in everything we do, from our salsas to our pork belly taco which is our top selling taco, every event we book we take the time to know the special occasion that is being celebrated to make sure we provide a great customer experience from day one. I am very proud of what my wife and I have accomplished in the last 4yrs building our catering side of the business to opening 2 locations and having 2 beautiful babies in that time span, it really shows me how much she believes in me and what she means to the business as well.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What has helped us build a reputation within our market is how we take pride in building rapport with our customers to get to know them as they come to visit us at our Montebello locations and the catering events we do from a birthday celebration to a couples wedding.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
We started with the funds we had saved while working our 9-5 the it took a couple thousands to get the business up in running, by having to purchase a Taco Cart and inventory to service a backyard event as we started to get a little business we just invested those funds back into the business to keep it going.
