We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Micole Love a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Micole, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
My business is Miicon Genteel. I came up with the name Miicon in my younger years. I realized that I create iconic art, and my name starts with an ‘M’, and in that moment Miicon was born. Genteel is a highlight to Miicon as refined and respectable. The uniqueness of my brand comes from focusing on self-insecurities instead of others’ creations or opinions. My brand solves the problem of being seen, but how you will be received is up to you.
Micole, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I actually began my life as a designer at the age of 6. As a child my mother would always create the most amazing designs, so I began sketching my own in a book that I hid from everyone. I was afraid that if someone found it I would be in trouble. So one day my worst fears came to life when my mother discovered my book. But to my surprise, she was not upset. She actually began creating the designs from my sketches.
I then went through years of creating my own designs before I finally achieved a state where the quality and quantity of art I could produce met my standard. A standard that serves neither ego nor ignorance and inspires a unisexy expression of inner self. Is my pleasure and story to present Miicon Genteel to the world.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn fear and the need to protect and hide myself. When I was young I was only told what not to be and what life could do to me, but not for me. So as I grew up I started working jobs I hated, with no respect, and nothing to look forward to but the freedom of the night. After working for nearly 8 years at minimum wage I made a realization. I don’t believe in God because I am living a life not for me, in fear of letting go and losing. So I made a promise to God, and quit my job that day on pure faith.
Ever since that day I have given love and received everything I needed, but nothing that I wanted selfishly. Now I am moving to a platform of sharing myself with others through the art of Miicon Genteel. Art focused on pulling our highest self to the surface to share with others.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
When I was young, I prayed to be fat and it actually happened. I become over 300lbs and realized that wanting someone to love me would never happen. So I decided to change and lost nearly 150 lbs, but began to lose myself in ego and a lifestyle that did not represent who I really was.
What bothered me the most was the attention I received once I changed, and it made me develop an anger toward the world. So one day I projected my ego and as a result, I was pistol-whipped and carjacked. As I sat in the hospital I realized that needed to return to my true self and be love instead of looking for it,
This story inspired the art of my Miicon Genteel Gun Glasses. The piece displays one gun up which represents my past, and one gun down that signifies the dropping of my ego and wants.
