We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Michelle Su a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Michelle, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I’ve been drawn to the arts for as long as I can remember. As a kid, I was completely captivated by cartoons like Scooby-Doo, SpongeBob, Arthur, Pokémon, The Flintstones, The Jetsons, The Fairly OddParents, and The Simpsons — all of which shaped how I saw the world through colour and imagination. The show that impacted me the most was Art Attack. It made creativity feel fun, accessible, and limitless, and it sparked something in me at a young age. Ever since then, I’ve been fascinated by art and design. That early spark grew into a lifelong passion that eventually led me to pursue a creative career.

Michelle, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My creative journey began when a close friend, Matthew Almeria, referred me to a startup after university. There, I explored different mediums — from animation and UI/UX to video editing, packaging, and print design — which helped me build a strong creative foundation.
A year later, I applied for a graphic design position with the Toronto Raptors and Toronto FC (MLSE) — half-jokingly, never expecting to get it. When I did, it was a dream come true, combining my love for sports and design. Sometimes, I still get that unrealistic feeling that this is a dream — that I actually get to do this every day.
Since then, I’ve worked on projects like the Raptors NBA Canada Series in Montreal, Vince Carter’s jersey retirement, the Raptors 30th Anniversary campaign, The Raptor x Blue Jays crossover, and the Toronto FC Energy Kit Campaign — many of which earned industry recognition.
I’m especially grateful to be part of a team that’s supportive, imaginative, and incredibly talented, where I get to learn and grow from the creative minds around me every day.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Honestly, my goal’s pretty simple — I just want to make cool stuff and hopefully make a few people smile along the way. I love mixing sports and art, finding fun ways to bring both worlds together. At the end of the day, it’s all about having fun with the creative process and doing what I love for as long as I can.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding part of being a creative is getting to do what I love every day — it never really feels like work, even though it technically is. I get to bring ideas to life, experiment, and have fun while doing it. There’s something really special about being able to express myself creatively and call it a career.
