We were lucky to catch up with Michelle Shelton recently and have shared our conversation below.
Michelle, appreciate you joining us today. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
I got my first client off of social media off my Facebook page. I would post my sets that did at a very low price and I did a lot special back then to bring clients. I was so excited because I was so ready to do other people nails besides my own at the time. I was so thankful that, that person gave me a chance to show off my work on their hands. I was so new at doing nails at the time so for them to give me a chance made my day. It’ll always be a memory I’ll cherish forever.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Michelle and I started my nail journey in 2020. I was sitting in my car one day coming from work and out of nowhere I was just looking at my nails that I got done at the nail shop and I didn’t like them lol. So I decided to look up some schools and I called around and schools called me back to do an interview. I was so excited because I was always into getting my nails done but never imagined doing them other people. I knew this journey wasn’t going to be easy but nothing in life comes easy so I was definitely up for the challenge. I am very creative when it comes to nails, my speciality is freestyle. I love a good freestyle because I get to be myself and show my creative side. Nails are like my canvas and I get to do whatever. I love to make my clients happy because at the end of the day I love to make them feel special. When my clients come sit with me to get their nails done it’s their time to relax. I always want to my clients feel relaxed at every appointment when booking with me. My goal is to always keep my client satisfied with each visit. My name is my brand so each set on my client have to represent me but also have to make my clients look and feel good too. What sets me apart from others is that I do me and I stay in my own lane. I can’t worry about what next person is doing because then I’m getting lost and out my lane and not staying focus on what I have going on. Being focused and determined is what got me far in my journey. I am mostly proud of myself for not giving up when times got hard for me. It’s been days I wanted to give up because I felt I was stuck in one place. I’m proud that I’ve been on this journey for three years and still going strong. I’m proud that my clients stayed down with me never gave up on me. I’m proud that my friends , Tre, Tee, Lauryn, Kyla, and Ciera push me to keep going and motivate me to keep going even when I want to quite. I’m proud that my boyfriend supports me and tell me I’m going to be big one day. I’m proud that family supports me. I want my potential clients to know I’m a dope nail tech and I love what I do. I want them to know that when they sit with me that their sets are going to last and going to look good. I want them to know that it’s safe with me and it’s a good time every time.
How did you build your audience on social media?
How I build my audience on social media is by post everyday and being consistent. Being consistent is KEY. Advice I will give others is focus on your brand and what you have going on in YOUR lane. Don’t worry about the next person have going on. Stay consistent and motivated throughout your process. Remember nothing comes easy but it’ll all be worth it. The light is at the end of tunnel, you just have to keep pushing yourself to get there.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Social media and word of mouth. I just keep posting daily to keep pushing my business out there.
