We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Michelle Saldana a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Michelle thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you tell us about an important lesson you learned while working at a prior job?
When I started working with animals at the young age of 12 and even when I had my first “ actual “ job at the age of 18 at an animal hospital I was faced with challenges. The hands on animal care and husbandry of many animal helped me understand my strengths. I learned how to handle animals with safety and respect.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Michelle Saldana, a dedicated Veterinary Technician, the passionate Founder of HHC (Helping Homeless Companions), and an unwavering Animal Advocate with deep roots in the heart of Orange County, California. My remarkable journey in the world of animal welfare commenced at the tender age of seven, and since then, my commitment to these voiceless companions has never wavered.
My life’s mission has been intricately woven with the well-being of animals. I’ve tirelessly labored alongside them, whether through my profession, volunteering at animal care facilities, or providing grooming services. My unwavering advocacy seeks to instill respect and care for animals, ensuring that their voices are heard in a world that often overlooks their needs.
My extensive experience as a Wildlife Technician in the vibrant city of Huntington Beach has granted me a profound understanding of the challenges faced by our wildlife counterparts. This invaluable knowledge has paved the way for me to pursue my ultimate dream – the establishment of HHC. In late 2015, this ambitious nonprofit endeavor became a reality.
Through HHC, we’ve made a substantial impact on our community. Countless outreach days have provided vital support to both animals and their guardians. Grooming events have not only improved the physical well-being of pets but also strengthened the bond between humans and their furry friends. We’ve facilitated access to essential medical care for pets in need, ensuring they can lead healthier and happier lives.
HHC’s unwavering commitment to spaying and neutering initiatives plays a pivotal role in curbing the rampant overpopulation of animals in our city. By addressing this issue head-on, we’re actively working towards a brighter future where every animal has the chance to thrive, and their well-being is at the forefront of our community’s priorities.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
My life’s journey has been a tapestry of challenging situations, each one meticulously weaving threads of resilience into my character. Through these trials, one unwavering purpose has emerged – to provide the care and respect that animals so rightfully deserve.
Time and again, I’ve found myself advocating for these voiceless beings, even when it meant standing up against the very individuals responsible for their well-being. This unwavering commitment to their welfare has led me to impart essential education on the fundamentals of animal care, arming both owners and the broader community with the knowledge necessary to ensure the best lives for these beloved creatures.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I’ve embarked on a transformative journey of unlearning the misconception that animal care must come at a high cost. In the financially demanding landscape of Orange County, I’ve encountered the steep hurdles of expensive animal care. However, I’ve persistently striven to redefine these situations to the best of my ability.
My unwavering goal is to ensure that all animals, regardless of financial constraints, receive the care they deserve. My strategy hinges on the power of education, aiming to empower families with the knowledge needed to provide for their animal companions. Through advocacy and teaching, I’ve initiated a paradigm shift, reshaping long-held beliefs and dismantling the notion that high costs are synonymous with quality animal care. This journey of unlearning, which I’ve undertaken, has not only been a personal evolution but a transformative force for the welfare of animals and their caregivers.
