We were lucky to catch up with Michelle Rubinstein recently and have shared our conversation below.
Michelle, appreciate you joining us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
Yes! Being creative has been one of the major constants throughout my life. I am multi-passionate creative and am naturally drawn to wholly involving myself in so many projects that I sometimes cannot help but wonder what it would be like to have a regular job and only focused on “one” thing.
Michelle, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Honestly from a young age I have always been interested in radio talk shows ever since watching Fraiser and even more specifically watching Roz producing behind the scenes. Audio focused mediums, interview style programming, and story telling have always captivated me. I just find people fascinating!
I’ve been producing, hosting, & show running podcasts for 15 years.
In 2016 I cofounded Total Betty Podcast Network where my partner and life long friend Ilissa Daley and I have produced 5 Top 150 after show podcasts with over 600,000 downloads covering nostalgic teen dramas, like One Tree Hill & The OC. But, what I am most proud of is that we have cultivated an amazing and loyal listener community that has fostered strong friendships, genuine connections, & a sense of belonging.
Most recently I’ve joined another project with Seth Vargas called Movie Friends a weekly film podcast where we discuss film history one movie at a time. We are more interested in being friends than being right, and we want to create a community of friends where all opinions and experience levels are welcome to join the conversation.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
It’s always the friendships! Providing a space for a community to grow around a shared love of something. It’s such a simple beauty of life.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Non-creatives (God bless them) just have a difficult time understanding why we just cannot get a “regular” job. It is in the core of me to keep pushing to build up our network, listenership, & opportunities despite how challenging it can be. There is no straightforward path. There is no right or wrong answers. You need to be open to trying almost anything, willing to be humbled, and not letting mistakes or failures stop you.
